Description: This guide provides best practices for managing the Customer-facing Display during offline payments, ensuring smooth transactions when the system is temporarily disconnected from the network.
- When Shift4 Dine operates in Offline Payments mode, all payments must be processed using either the built-in reader on the Workstation or its backup credit card PIN Pad terminal.
- When attempting to take Credit payments via the Display while Offline Payments are active, a prompt appears, and messaging on the Workstation notifies the employee that Display payments are not available in offline mode and to use the onboard reader instead of the Display.
Process payments using the backup device (PINPad or Onboard Reader) until you are no longer in offline payments mode.
Commerce Engine Integration
When the Customer Display is integrated with Commerce Engine, it supports offline payment processing directly on the device — no need to redirect customers to a backup reader.
- Payments submitted through the Customer Display are evaluated and approved locally when the device cannot reach the Shift4 payments platform.
- Approved transactions are stored securely on the device and automatically submitted for processing once connectivity is restored.
- If the Customer Display is moved to another terminal at the location, stored offline transactions are recovered and submitted when internet access is restored.
Important: Offline approval does not guarantee authorization. Transactions approved offline are submitted for online authorization when connectivity returns and may be declined by the cardholder's bank.
