Description: Learn how to set up and connect your Commerce Engine payment device for the first time.
When you receive your Commerce Engine device, follow these steps to get it connected and ready to accept payments.
Setup Steps
- Power on the device: The device will start up automatically.
- Select your language: Choose the language for the setup screens.
- Connect to a network: Select your connection type and follow the on-screen prompts:
- Wi-Fi: Select your network and enter the password
- Cellular: The device connects automatically if a SIM is installed
- Ethernet: Connect the cable, and the device connects automatically
- Wait for the download to complete: Your device will download and install its software. This typically takes 5–15 minutes, depending on your connection speed. The device may restart one or more times during this step. This is normal. Do not power off the device.
- Your device is ready! When the Shift4 idle screen appears, your device is ready to accept payments.
Troubleshooting
The setup screen never appears after powering on.
Restart the device. If the screen still doesn't appear, contact Shift4 Support.
The device is stuck on the download screen.
Check that your device has an active network connection. If there is no progress after 30 minutes, restart the device and allow it to resume.
The download fails immediately.
Check that your device has an active network connection. If the issue continues, contact Shift4 Support.
My Wi-Fi network isn't showing up.
Confirm the network is broadcasting and the device is within range. If you are using a 5GHz network, confirm the device supports 5GHz connections.
