Description: Learn about the optional payment features available on Commerce Engine, what cardholders see on screen, and when each feature applies.
Each feature below must be enabled for the merchant by Shift4.
Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)
When an international cardholder pays, Commerce Engine detects the foreign card and presents a currency choice screen. The cardholder chooses between paying in the merchant's local currency or their home currency. The exchange rate and any markup are disclosed on screen.
If the cardholder does not make a selection within the configured timeout, the transaction proceeds in the merchant's local currency.
Internal Only:
DCC is only offered when all three conditions are met: the merchant is enabled for DCC on the Shift4 Platform, the card's currency differs from the merchant's local currency, and the card type supports DCC. Not all card brands are eligible, and some have additional restrictions on contactless transactions or transaction amounts. Card-scheme rules require that the currency choice screen is always neutral — the cardholder cannot be nudged toward either option.
Surcharging
Before the transaction completes, the cardholder is shown the surcharge amount and must explicitly accept it to continue. If the cardholder declines, the transaction does not proceed.
Alipay+
Commerce Engine displays a QR code on the terminal screen. The cardholder scans it with their phone using a supported wallet. Commerce Engine then waits for the cardholder's phone to confirm payment.
Gift Card Acceptance
Commerce Engine supports the following gift card interactions:
- Activation: Activate a new gift card
- Add money: Reload an existing gift card
- Balance check: Check the remaining balance
- Cashback: Redeem a gift card balance as cash
- Deactivate: Deactivate a gift card
- Reactivate: Reactivate a previously deactivated gift card
Signature Capture
When a transaction requires a signature, either driven by the card's CVM requirements or requested by the POS, the cardholder signs directly on the terminal screen. The captured signature is returned to the POS with the transaction result.
Tipping
A tip prompt screen appears before the card interaction, depending on the merchant's solution and configuration. Preset tip percentages, prompt mode, and defaults are all configurable in Shift4 TMS.
Internal Only:
Tip configuration lives in the Solution Template Config as defaults and can be overridden per device in Shift4 TMS or per transaction via REST qualifiers. Visit the Configure Commerce Engine in Shift4 TMS for the three-layer precedence model.
Tax-Free Shopping
For eligible international travelers, Commerce Engine supports automated VAT reclaim powered by Global Blue. The Global Blue Eligibility Detection (ED) Module identifies eligible cardholders automatically, and the Global Blue IC2 Terminal app handles the Tax-Free flow on the device.
Note: Tax-Free Shopping is available in select international markets only. Contact your Shift4 representative to confirm availability in your region.
Internal Only:
Tax-Free Shopping is available on Shift4 One by default, subject to regional availability. It requires the Global Blue IC2 Terminal and Global Blue ED Module overlay apps to be installed on the device.
