Description: Learn how to accept online payments through Shift4 Checkout, including hosted payment pages, embedded payment forms, payment links, and the features available to you.
Note: This feature is currently in pilot. Availability may be limited.
Overview
Shift4 Checkout gives you multiple pathways to accept online payments, serving different integration needs while running on the same foundation.
Choose How Your Customers Pay
You choose how your customers pay:
- Checkout Redirect is a low-code solution that sends customers to a secure, Shift4-hosted payment page optimized for conversion with streamlined customization.
- Custom Components let you embed secure card input fields directly into your own forms, giving you full control over the UI. Custom Components are SAQ A (Self-Assessment Questionnaire A) compliant.
Both options are supported under the Shift4 Checkout product and are powered by the same Checkout Session API. One API call creates a session that encapsulates the entire payment flow, so you can start with Checkout Redirect and move to Custom Components later without re-integrating your backend. All paths automatically handle SAQ A-level PCI compliance, SCA (Strong Customer Authentication) and 3DS (3D Secure) authentication, and wallet rendering (Apple Pay, Google Pay).
Payment Links
Payment links created through Integration Hub or third-party integration (3PI) integrations use the same Shift4-hosted payment page experience.
Key Features
- Line items: Accept payment for multiple products within a single transaction. (Checkout Redirect only)
- Saved cards: Once a card is saved, it can be charged again in future payments without requiring the customer to re-enter their card details.
- Card verification: A $0 authentication payment validates and saves a card for future rebilling, without charging the customer anything at that moment.
- 3D Secure: Applied automatically, based on default fraud rules, adding an extra layer of protection against fraudulent transactions.
- Webhooks: Receive real-time notifications for all events related to a checkout session, delivered in the order they occurred.
- Wallets: Customers can pay with Google Pay and Apple Pay, with all wallet handling managed entirely by Shift4.
- Branding: In the Customer Hub, customize the payment page's logo, page title and subtitle, background color, button color, font, wallet visibility, and your business's terms and conditions. (Checkout Redirect only)
- Additional data collection: Collect billing and shipping addresses, as well as custom fields for any additional information you need.
- Automatic translation: The checkout page is automatically translated into 28 languages based on the customer's locale. The default language is English. (Checkout Redirect only)
- Static fields: Display additional read-only information on the checkout page, such as payment details, invoice number, or other reference data. (Checkout Redirect only)
- E-mail receipts: Customers automatically receive an e-mail receipt confirming their payment.
- Custom amount: A customer can choose how much to pay or select one of the predefined amounts. This is particularly useful for charity donations.
- eDCC: Customers paying with a foreign-issued card can choose to complete the transaction in their own currency rather than yours, with the conversion rate displayed before confirming payment.
- MCP: Display and accept prices in the customer's selected currency.
- Surcharging: Add a surcharge fee to card payments, passed on to the customer.
