Description: Learn how to connect your Shift4 Commerce Engine device to Wi-Fi, configure essential settings, and complete the setup so you can begin processing payments.
After unboxing your Shift4 Commerce Engine device, follow these instructions to connect to your Wi-Fi network and complete the device setup to begin processing.
- Power on your Commerce Device. Once powered on, you will see the home screen.
- While the device’s lock screen feature should already be disabled before shipment, if this needs to be disabled, follow the instructions and complete up to step #9 in this document.

- To connect via Wi-Fi, complete the following steps:
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Network & internet.
- Tap Wi-Fi.
- The device will scan for Wi-Fi networks. Tap the network to which you would like to connect.
- Enter the Password to the Wi-Fi network you selected, and then tap CONNECT.
- If the connection was successful, “Connected” will be displayed under the selected Wi-Fi network, and the Wi-Fi icon will appear in the status bar at the top. Press the home button to return to the home screen.
- Tap Settings.
- If the Commerce Engine device’s date and time are inaccurate, this could cause issues such as the inability to sync or accept all forms of payment. Follow these instructions to set the correct date and time for your device.
- Tap Settings on the home screen.
- In Android Settings, tap the System section.
- In the System Settings, tap on the Date & Time section.
- When the Date & time screen displays, slide the "Automatic time zone" and "Use locale default" toggles to ON.
Important: If the incorrect time is displayed on the top left corner of the device when selecting these options, you will have to temporarily disable the "Automatic time zone", adjust it manually under "Select time zone," and then re-enable the "Automatic time zone." To do so, follow these steps:- Disable the "Automatic time zone" toggle.
- Tap Region.
- Select the appropriate option for the country.
- Select the appropriate option for the time zone.
- Once the country and time zone have been set, the screen will display as follows:
- Simply back out of the screen and slide the "Automatic time zone" to ON.
- Disable the "Automatic time zone" toggle.
- Once those two settings are enabled, simply back out of the screen to return to the home screen.
- Tap Settings on the home screen.
- Enable Commerce Engine's auto-start feature and grant necessary overlay permissions in Android. To set the permission to allow S4 Commerce to display over other applications and launch the application, complete the following steps:

- Select the S4 Commerce application.
- Select S4 Commerce in the "Display over other apps" Settings screen.
- Slide the toggle for Allow display over other apps setting to enable it.
- Restart the device by holding the power button on the front of the device and then selecting Restart.
The device will restart.
Commerce Engine will launch automatically and display the idle screen.
- Select the S4 Commerce application.
