Note: The automatic hiding of empty Display Groups described below is currently available only to pilot merchants on Shift4 Dine version 1.127.0 or later. If you are not part of this pilot, or your system has not yet updated to 1.127.0, your Display Groups will continue to appear regardless of whether they contain available items.
Overview
Display Groups in Shift4 Dine allow merchants to organize menu items more effectively, speeding up order entry and improving navigation.
- Display Groups offer enhanced functionality.
- You can create Subgroups by assigning a 'parent' group, which helps to further organize your groups.
- Menu items can be assigned to multiple Groups and Subgroups simultaneously.
In addition:
- Menu items retain their configured button color and can display quantity-on-hand (if enabled).
Item-level availability settings remain in place, and Display Groups now respond to them. Groups with no available items are hidden automatically during order entry. For details, visit the Configure Menu Availability on Shift4 Dine Customer Hub article.
- Display Groups and Subgroups do not interfere with existing Item/Department configurations. Departments can still be used alongside Groups.
Empty Display Groups Are Hidden Automatically
Shift4 Dine only displays Display Groups that contain at least one item a server can order at that moment. A Group is hidden from the order entry screen when it has no items assigned or when all its items are unavailable due to item-level menu availability settings, such as revenue center restrictions or scheduled time windows.
Parent Groups stay visible as long as at least one Subgroup beneath them still has an available item.
This keeps the Groups tab clean during service and is especially useful for locations that run different menus in different revenue centers or at different times of day. No configuration is required.
Note: Items that are out of stock (tracking quantity of 0) do not cause a Group to be hidden. They remain visible in the menu.
Common Use Cases
Display Groups and Subgroups can be especially useful in a variety of scenarios:
-
Large Bar Menus
- Create Subgroups for different liquor types within a Parent Group (e.g., “Liquor” or “Spirits”). This reduces scrolling by organizing items into smaller, more navigable categories.
-
Extensive Wine Lists
- Organize large wine menus by creating Subgroups based on Wine Type, Region, or any other categorization. Items can be included in multiple Subgroups, allowing flexible organization. Servers can find specific bottles based on region, year, or type.
-
Speed Screens and Shortcut Groupings
- Items can exist in multiple Groups/Subgroups, enabling shortcuts across different parts of the menu for faster access.
-
Multiple Dining Areas or Service Periods
- Build separate Display Groups for each dining area or service period, and control which items appear by setting item-level menu availability. Staff working in one revenue center see only the Groups relevant to them; Groups from the other area are automatically hidden. The same approach works for time-based menus such as brunch, lunch, and late night.
Important:
- Display Groups are not available for Shift4 Duo, Online Ordering, QR Pay, Kiosk, or third-party online ordering integrations at this time.
- As a best practice, creating or editing Display Groups should be performed outside of business hours or during non-peak times, when the POS is not actively being used for order entry or ticket creation.
- Automatic hiding of empty Display Groups applies to the Workstation, Handheld, and Tablet.
