Getting Started
What do I need to start accepting crypto?
The Pay with Crypto feature is now available to select merchants. To get started, you’ll need:
- POS version 1.117 or higher
- SkyTab POS with the Pay with Crypto feature enabled
- Pay with Crypto using QR Pay is available for SkyTab Mobile and printed receipts
Check out our Getting Started Guide for more details.
Payment Processing
How does a customer pay with crypto?
- Staff selects QR Pay at checkout so customers can scan a QR code on either a printed receipt or via a SkyTab mobile device using their phone’s native camera.
- The customer then selects the Pay with Crypto option.
- The customer can either:
- Connect an exchange or wallet like Coinbase, Binance, Metamask, Phantom, etc. (recommended)
- Or choose to Pay with Manual Transfer.
- If connecting an exchange or wallet, Shift4's third-party wallet connector will request the customer to allow access to link the account for payment.
- The customer then completes the payment flow.
Which geographies are eligible for the SkyTab POS Pay with Crypto feature?
This feature is currently available for US-based merchants.
At this time, merchants located in New York or Alaska are not eligible to use the Pay with Crypto feature due to regulatory requirements, unless an exception has been granted. If you are a New York or Alaska merchant interested in enabling the feature, we encourage you to join the waitlist here so that you’ll be notified as soon as the feature becomes available in your state.
Is there a minimum transaction amount required to use Pay with Crypto?
Yes. The minimum transaction amount for Pay with Crypto is $1.03. Transactions below this amount will not be eligible for crypto payment
Which cryptocurrencies can be accepted by merchants?
100+ cryptocurrencies and stablecoins like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, USDC, USDT, and more will be accepted. We also support the 20+ most used exchange and wallet links through our wallet connector flow.
For the Wallet Connector flow via our third-party provider, we support:
- Any asset when using Coinbase or Binance
- Any asset on the Ethereum, Solana, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Polygon blockchain networks when paying with a DeFi wallet (Metamask, Phantom)
For the Manual Transfer Flow, we support:
- USDC on Ethereum, Solana, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Polygon
- USDT on Ethereum and Tron
What is a stablecoin?
A stablecoin is a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a stable value by being pegged to a reserve asset, such as a fiat currency (like the U.S. dollar or Euro).
Who can use the Mesh flow? Merchants or customers?
Mesh is a third-party provider that allows customers to securely link their wallets or exchange accounts to complete the payment.
Mesh is not in the flow of funds for merchants; it's a convenience for the end customer to complete the transaction.
What are "Interchange" rates like for Pay with Crypto transactions?
No interchange rates. Visa, Mastercard, and Discover are not involved at all.
How do I confirm the Pay with Crypto transaction was successful?
On your SkyTab terminal, the order will show as Confirmed first, then Complete / Paid second, with tender as “Crypto”.
Payment Settlement
Do I have to hold crypto?
No. Merchants never touch crypto; crypto payments are automatically converted to US dollars and then settled to your bank account.
How fast are crypto payments settled?
Most cryptocurrency payments are settled in a matter of seconds, and merchants will receive a batch settlement at the end of each day. Merchants will get daily settlements with similar cutoffs as cards.
For crypto chains that can take longer periods to complete, would it time out the approval on the marketplace checkout site?
For users doing checkout, the checkout won't time out. It will complete when it completes, depending on the chain. Once the end user initiates the transaction, the rest will take care of itself.
Is there any volatility risk for merchants? What if the price of crypto changes?
Merchants never touch crypto, and all payments are automatically converted to US dollars and settled to your bank account, so you are not exposed to any volatility. If you’d like to be settled in stablecoins instead, please let us know.
How do I view my crypto transactions?
Visit the Lighthouse Business Manager Reporting for Pay With Crypto Payments article for details.
Why isn’t a recent crypto transaction showing up in my Pay with Crypto Transaction report?
Don’t worry—it may take up to 10 minutes for a recent transaction to appear in the report.
That’s because the report only displays transactions that are in a “Completed” status. While a payment may show as “Confirmed” earlier in the process, it won’t appear in the report until it has fully finalized on the blockchain.
Feature Setup
Does the pay with crypto feature integrate with my current POS?
- The Pay with Crypto feature is currently compatible with SkyTab POS QR Pay. Later this year, it will also be available for SkyTab Air.
- Your POS must be on version 1.117 or higher to enable Pay with Crypto.
- If you are on a lower version, you can upgrade by going to your on-site terminals, rebooting, and choosing Accept when prompted to update versions.
How do I train my staff?
- Schedule a live walk-through of the pay with crypto feature.
- Keep a printed step-by-step guide at checkout
- Make this quick reference FAQ available for staff
- Provide a simple script: "We accept crypto! At checkout, scan the QR code with your phone and select the Pay with Crypto option. You can then connect your wallet of choice to proceed with the payment."
Security & Risk
Is it safe to accept crypto?
Yes, though our secure Pay with Crypto checkout experience accepting crypto payments is safe and easier than ever! Merchants never touch crypto, and all payments are automatically converted to US dollars and settled to your bank account, so you are not exposed to any volatility.
Can payments be reversed?
No. Crypto transactions are irreversible, which helps reduce fraud and chargebacks.
How does crypto eliminate chargebacks?
With crypto, each transaction is final. There is no way to “chargeback” transactions.
Customer Experience
Do customers need special wallets?
No special wallet is required—but customers do need a crypto wallet or exchange app that supports the cryptocurrencies you accept. They can connect their preferred wallet using the Pay with Crypto checkout flow.
If their wallet isn’t supported for automatic connection, they can still pay manually by sending a supported stablecoin (like USDC or USDT) to the provided payment address—if they have it in their wallet.
Can customers get refunds in crypto?
- Yes, merchants will still have the ability to issue refunds.
- Generally, we recommend that merchants don't execute a refund unless there is a mistake. In addition, we recommend that it is the merchant's policy to refund the fiat amount at the time of transaction, not the crypto amount, due to crypto market price changes.
