What is a Digital Receipt?
A Digital Receipt is a hosted, web-based version of your Workstation transaction receipt. Instead of a static PDF or image attachment, your guests receive a secure link by email or SMS that opens the receipt in any browser - no app required.
Digital Receipts replace the legacy email/SMS receipt with a faster, mobile-friendly experience, and give you a branded touchpoint with your guest after every visit, your logo, your colors, your message, and optional links to the actions you want them to take next.
Features
- Shift4 Dine-originated email/SMS receipts open as hosted Digital Receipts
- Merchant-controlled branding (logo, theme, accent color)
- Merchant-controlled receipt content (address, phone, header, footer)
- Promoted Shift4 Dine services (auto or manual)
- Custom links (buttons) on the receipt
- Optional QR code with custom message
Configuring Digital Receipts
All Digital Receipt settings live in the Shift4 Dine Customer Hub; select Shift4 Dine > Receipts > Presentation. Changes apply to new receipts only — already-sent receipts keep the settings active at send time.
Note: When you select "Save" at the bottom of the screen, you'll see the changes reflected in the live preview on the right. Always confirm the preview before sending a real test receipt.
1. Branding
Controls how your receipt looks at a glance — logo, visual theme, and accent color.
| Setting | What it does |
| Logo | Appears at the top of every receipt. Use a high-contrast image with a transparent or white background. Displays at roughly 120 px wide on mobile. |
| Receipt Style | Visual theme that adjusts typography and layout to match your business tone. |
| Accent Color | Choose from a curated palette tied to the theme, or select Custom to enter a specific brand color. Use good contrast against white - light pastels can be hard to read. |
2. Receipt Content
Controls what guest-facing information appears on the receipt body.
Contact Info
Two toggles control whether the location's contact details appear:
- Address: Show/hide your store address
- Phone: Show/hide your store phone number
Custom Messages
Field |
Purpose |
Example |
| Header Message | Short text shown at the top of the receipt body. | "Welcome back!" |
| Footer Message | Short text shown at the bottom of the receipt. | "Thank you for visiting!" |
3. Promotions
Controls which calls-to-action appear on the receipt.
Auto-promote Shift4 Dine services (recommended)
- On (default): Shift4 Dine automatically promotes the services you have available - Online Ordering, Reservations, Loyalty/Rewards, Gift Cards - based on what's enabled at your location and what's most relevant to the guest.
- Off: You take manual control of each individual service toggle. Online Ordering appears as your Primary service when present.
Additional Links
Add custom buttons to the receipt - online ordering, catering menus, gift card pages, and more.
| Field | Details |
| Name | Button label. Max 30 characters. Use short, action-oriented text: "Order Online", "Leave a Review", "Catering Menu". |
| URL | Must start with http:// or https:// — added automatically if omitted. Use production URLs only. |
Best Practices
- You can add multiple links and remove them at any time.
- Limit to 2 – 3 links to keep the receipt scannable.
4. QR Code
Adds a single scannable QR to the bottom of the receipt. Inactive by default - toggle Show QR code on receipts to enable.
| Field | Details |
| URL | Destination the QR resolves to. Must be a valid http:// or https:// URL. If invalid, the Save button will be disabled until it's corrected. |
| Message | Short helper text shown under the QR code. Max 30 characters. Example: "Scan for our menu." |
Common Uses
- Linking to a feedback form
- Linking to a loyalty program signup
- Linking to a digital menu or upcoming event page
To remove the QR code entirely, clear the URL field and save.
5. Save and Verify
- Select Save at the bottom of the page.
- Check the live preview on the right side of the screen.
- Run a real transaction at your POS using a test email or phone number you control.
- Open the receipt link and confirm the logo, accent color, messages, service buttons, links, and QR code all look and resolve correctly.
Tips and Best Practices
- Make changes during off-hours: Updates apply to new receipts immediately.
- Keep messaging fresh: A "Happy Holidays!" footer in March looks careless. Review header and footer messages monthly.
- Don't overload the receipt: Pick the 1–3 actions that genuinely matter to your guests.
- Audit links quarterly: A broken "Order Online" button on every receipt is a real revenue leak.
FAQs
Will my existing receipts change?
No. Settings changes only apply to new receipts generated after you save. Previously sent receipts continue to display with the settings that were live when they were sent.
Why don't I see my logo on a guest's receipt?
Most often, the logo wasn't saved, or you're checking a receipt that was generated before the logo was uploaded. Confirm in Receipts > Presentation, select Save, run a fresh test transaction, and open that receipt.
Can I customize per-receipt - for example, add a different message for to-go orders?
No. All receipts from a given location use the same Presentation settings. Per-order-type customization is being considered for a future release.
A guest says their receipt link doesn't work. What do I do?
Ask them to open the link directly from the original email or SMS (don't retype it) and check spam or junk if the message never arrived. If the issue persists, you can resend the receipt from the POS workflow. If multiple guests report the same problem, contact Shift4 Dine Support with the ticket number.
