Description: Learn how to unbox, activate, and connect your Verifone P630-A to the Shift4 platform using Commerce Engine.
The Verifone P630-A is a compact countertop payment device with a 3.5-inch touchscreen, physical keypad, and support for tap, insert, and swipe transactions. It runs Commerce Engine and connects to the Shift4 platform over Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
Unbox the Device
- Check the shipping box for signs of tampering.
- Confirm the following items are present:
- One Verifone P630-A payment device
- One connectivity cabling assembly
- One power supply
- Inspect the device for physical tampering. Check the card slot and magnetic swipe reader for foreign objects.
Warning: If any inspection fails, contact Shift4 Support immediately and do not proceed with setup.
Connect the Ethernet Dongle
Note: Before starting, have a small Phillips screwdriver ready.
- Place the device face down on a flat surface.
- If the back cover is already mounted, use a screwdriver to unfasten the screw, then press firmly on the cover and push upward to remove it.
- Connect the dongle to the port on the back of the device. Make sure the cable and connector are aligned properly before pressing down; misalignment can damage the connector pins.
- Replace the back cover and slide it gently downward until it snaps into place. Tighten the screw for added security. Do not over-tighten.
- If you plan to mount the device to a PIN Pad stand, do so now before connecting cables.
- Connect the 12V power supply to the DC IN port on the Ethernet dongle (marked with a bolt symbol).
- For Ethernet connectivity, connect the RJ-45 patch cable to the port labelled "ETH" on the dongle, then connect the other end to your POS or its designated network drop. For Wi-Fi only setups, skip this step.
- Plug the power supply into a wall outlet.
Important: Connect to the port labelled "ETH". The device will not connect if the patch cable is inserted into the RS232 RJ-45 port.
Note: The device powers on automatically after connecting to power. If it does not, press and hold the power button for three to five seconds. If the device still does not power on, check all connections and contact Shift4 Support.
Activate the Device
Note: Before starting activation, confirm you have a local network with internet access available. Ethernet is recommended.
Commerce Engine will guide you through language selection, network setup, and software download. This process takes approximately 15–20 minutes and may include automatic reboots. When activation completes, the device displays the black Shift4 idle screen and is ready to accept payment requests.
Note: If using a static IP, you will be prompted to enter the IP address, gateway, and DNS settings during activation. The network prefix length is typically 24. Note the static IP address — you will need it for POS integration.

Connect to Your POS
How the P630-A connects to your POS depends on your integration type.
- On-premise: Your POS sends payment requests directly to the device's IP address. Use port 8085 for S4 REST or port 8084 for OPI. The device must have a static IP address.
-
Cloud: Your POS sends requests to the Shift4 Cloud rather than directly to the device. Confirm that your POS application includes the correct device parameters in each request — specifically
device.manufactureranddevice.serialNumber— and that it can reach the Shift4 Cloud endpoint. No static IP is required.
Consult your POS vendor's documentation for specific connection steps.
