Set Up the PAX IM30 With Commerce Engine

The PAX IM30 is an unattended payment terminal designed for self-service environments. It supports tap, insert, swipe, and QR/barcode scanning, and runs Commerce Engine. It connects to the Shift4 platform over Ethernet or Wi-Fi and is built for both indoor and outdoor installation.

Unbox the Device

1. Check the shipping box for signs of tampering.
2. Confirm the following items are present:
   • One PAX IM30 unattended payment terminal
   • One mounting bracket
   • Four M4 nuts
   • Four M4 screws
   • One 4G antenna with 1m cable (if ordered)
3. Inspect the device for physical tampering. Check the card slots, magnetic swipe reader, and contactless area for foreign objects.

Warning: If any inspection fails, contact Shift4 Support immediately and do not proceed with installation.

Mount the Device

The IM30 is designed to be mounted behind a panel on a vertical or near-vertical surface. The mounting surface must be between 30° and 90° incline; the IP65 ingress protection rating is not guaranteed outside this range.

Before starting, you will need a mounting plate with four M4 stud bolts and a DC power source within the 7–48V range.

1. Secure the mounting bracket to the mounting plate using the four M4 stud bolts and nuts.
2. Insert the IM30 through the front of the mounting plate into the bracket.
3. Secure the IM30 with four M4 screws. Apply a torque of 0.6–0.8 Nm for mounting plates up to 4mm thick. For thicker plates, use M4 screws with a thread length between (plate thickness + 10mm) and (plate thickness + 14mm).

Important: Applying excessive torque or using incorrect screw lengths may trigger hardware anti-tampering features.

Connect the Cables

Connect all required cables to the back of the device before mounting, as ports face the rear.

1. Connect an Ethernet cable for network connectivity.
2. Connect the power source to the appropriate input (Digital IO, MDB, JVMA, or RS232 power pin, depending on your configuration).

Activate the Device

Note: Before starting activation, confirm you have a network connection available. Ethernet is recommended.

Once powered on, Commerce Engine will guide you through language selection, network setup, and software download. This process takes approximately 15–20 minutes and may include automatic reboots. When activation completes, the device displays the black Shift4 idle screen and is ready to accept payment requests.

Connect to Your POS or Kiosk Application

How the IM30 connects to your host application depends on your integration type.

• On-premise: Your host application sends payment requests directly to the device's IP address. Use port 8085 for S4 REST or port 8084 for OPI. The device must have a static IP address.
• On-device: The POS or kiosk application runs directly on the device alongside Commerce Engine. Payment requests are routed locally without requiring a network connection between the host application and the terminal.
• Cloud: Your host application sends requests to the Shift4 Cloud rather than directly to the device. Confirm that your host application includes the correct device parameters in each request — specifically device.manufacturer and device.serialNumber — and that it can reach the Shift4 Cloud endpoint. No static IP is required.
