Description: Learn how to enable, use, and exit Training Mode in Shift4 Dine to practice workflows and train employees without creating real transactions or affecting your reports.
Note: This feature is currently available only for Pilot users.
Overview
Training Mode allows you to practice using Shift4 Dine on the Workstation and Handheld without creating real transactions or affecting your reports. Common uses include training new employees, practicing workflows, and testing menu or configuration changes.
Note: Training Mode is enabled per terminal. Data created in Training Mode is permanently deleted when you exit and does not sync to the Shift4 Customer Hub. Other terminals continue operating normally while Training Mode is active.
Note: To enable training mode on the Handheld device, please contact Shift4 support.
What You Can Do in Training Mode
You can perform most day-to-day POS actions, including:
- Create and manage tickets
- Interact with menu items, modifiers, and discounts
- Use Orders view and Tables view
- Split tickets and manage coursing
- Take payments using cash, check, gift certificates, and custom tenders
What is Not Available in Training Mode
The following features are not available in Training Mode:
- Credit card payments
- PMS (Property Management System) payments
- Sending tickets to printers and Kitchen Display Systems
- House accounts, gift cards, and loyalty
- Online ordering
- Timecards, tips, tills, and shift reports
- Manager, Host, and Caller ID screens
Enable Training Mode
From the Employee Dashboard (Workstation only)
- Open the Employee Dashboard.
- Toggle Training Mode on.
- Review the warning message and tap OK to confirm and enter Training Mode.
- The POS restarts and enters Training Mode.
Note: If Training Mode is unavailable on your terminal, visit the Troubleshoot Training Mode article for guidance.
Internal Only:
From the Login Screen (Workstation and Handheld)
- From the login screen, tap the version, serial number, and IP area at the bottom center of the screen six times quickly to open the Secret Menu.
- Toggle Training Mode on.
- Review the warning message.
- Tap OK to confirm.
The device restarts and enters Training Mode.
Visual Indicators
When Training Mode is active, you will see:
- A yellow status bar labeled Training Mode
- A yellow border around the screen
- A menu option in the status bar to exit Training Mode
These indicators help ensure you always know when the device is in Training Mode.
Log In and Out in Training Mode
When Training Mode is active, the POS prompts you to either remain in Training Mode or exit it each time you log in or log out. This prevents another user from accidentally using the POS in Training Mode.
Exit Training Mode
You can exit Training Mode at any time using any of the following methods:
- Toggle Training Mode off in the Employee Dashboard (Workstation only)
- Tap Exit Training Mode in the status bar (Workstation only)
- Choose to exit when logging in or out
Internal Only:
- Open the Secret Menu and toggle Training Mode off.
The device restarts and resumes normal operation. All Training Mode data is permanently deleted and does not sync to Shift4 Customer Hub.
