Description: Learn how to set up and use barcode scanning to apply discounts at the point of sale in Shift4 Dine — including how to configure barcodes in Shift4 Dine Customer Hub and how staff scans them during order entry.
Note: This feature is currently available only for Pilot users.
Overview
Discounts in Shift4 Dine can be assigned a unique barcode, allowing staff to apply them instantly by scanning — no manual searching or code entry required. This is especially useful in high-volume environments where speed and consistency at the point of sale matter.
Each barcode is tied to a single discount. When scanned, the correct discount is identified and applied automatically — subject to any existing discount permissions configured for your location.
Shift4 Dine Customer Hub Setup
Before staff can scan barcodes to apply discounts, a barcode value must be assigned to each discount in the Customer Hub.
To assign a barcode to a discount:
- Log in to the Customer Hub.
- Navigate to Shift4 Dine > Payments > Discounts.
- Select the discount you want to assign a barcode to.
- In the Advanced section, locate the Barcode field.
- Enter a 12-digit numeric barcode value.
- Save your changes.
Barcode requirements:
- Must be exactly 12 numeric digits
- Letters, special characters, and spaces are not accepted — the field will return an error if these are entered
- Each barcode must be unique — you cannot assign the same barcode to more than one discount at the same location
- The value entered must match exactly what your scanner outputs
Changes take effect immediately, no reboot required.
Using Barcode Discounts at the Workstation
Once a barcode has been assigned to a discount in the Customer Hub, staff can apply it during order entry using the Scan function in the discount modal.
To apply a discount by barcode scan:
- Open the ticket on the Workstation you want to apply the discount to.
- Tap the Discount icon at the top of the Order Entry screen.
- In the Select Discount(s) modal, tap the Scan button.
- Scan the barcode using your connected scanner.
- The discount is identified and applied automatically.
If the scan is unsuccessful:
- Confirm that the barcode value in the Customer Hub is exactly 12 numeric digits and matches what the scanner reads.
- Confirm the discount is active and available for the current order type.
- Confirm the staff member has permission to apply the discount.
Permissions & Restrictions
Barcode scanning does not bypass existing discount permissions. The following rules apply:
| Scenario | Result |
| Valid 12-digit barcode, staff has permission | Discount applied instantly |
| Valid 12-digit barcode, discount requires manager approval | Manager approval prompt appears |
| Barcode is not exactly 12 digits | Error displayed, discount not applied |
| Barcode contains letters, spaces, or special characters | Error displayed, discount not applied |
| Barcode is unrecognized or not assigned to a discount | Error displayed, discount not applied |
| Barcode assigned to an inactive discount | Scan rejected with clear feedback |
FAQs
Do I need special hardware to scan barcodes?
A compatible barcode scanner connected to your Workstation is required. Check with your Shift4 representative if you're unsure whether your hardware is supported.
Can the same barcode be used for multiple discounts?
No. Each barcode value must be unique and can only be assigned to one discount per location.
How many digits does a barcode need to be?
Barcodes must be exactly 12 numeric digits — no more, no less. Letters, special characters, and spaces are not accepted.
What happens if a barcode is invalid or doesn't scan correctly?
The Workstation will reject the scan and display an error message. The discount will not be applied.
Do discount permissions still apply?
Yes. If a discount requires manager approval or is restricted by role, those permissions are enforced even when the discount is applied by barcode scan.
Can barcodes be used for both item-level and ticket-level discounts?
Yes. Barcode scanning works for both item-level and ticket-level discounts.
Does this work on all devices?
Barcode scanning is supported on the Workstation. Check with your Shift4 representative for Handheld compatibility.
