Description: Learn how to pin a default menu view — Departments, Groups, or Favorites — to a specific terminal so the order entry screen always opens in the right view for that station.
Note: This feature is currently available only for Pilot users.
Overview
The Default Menu Type determines which menu navigation tab — Departments, Groups, or Favorites — is active when the order entry screen opens. Previously, this default could only be set at the Job level (for example, Server or Bartender), which tied the default to the employee rather than the terminal.
With the terminal-level override, managers can pin a menu view to a specific terminal so that every employee who logs into that station sees the right view for that station's role — Groups on a bar terminal for rapid spirits navigation, Departments on a quick-service terminal, and so on.
The default resolves in this priority order:
- Terminal level: Set on the terminal, applies to anyone who logs in.
- Job level: The logged-in employee's Job default (existing behavior).
- System default: Departments, if neither is configured.
The default applies when the order entry screen first loads after login. It does not switch views dynamically during an active session. The setting can be configured directly on the Workstation — it is found in the terminal's Hardware Settings.
Before You Begin
- Values: The terminal-level setting supports the same three values as the Job level — Favorites, Departments, and Groups — plus Default. When a terminal is set to Default, it falls back to the Job-level default (or to Departments if no Job-level default is set). All existing terminals are set to Default by default, so nothing changes until you configure a terminal.
- Devices: The terminal-level default applies to the Workstation, Tablet, and Handheld. It does not apply to Shift4 Duo.
Set the Default Menu Type From the Workstation
- On the terminal, go to Manager > Settings > Hardware.
- Select the Default Menu Type option and choose Default, Favorites, Departments, or Groups.
- Tap OK and then Save.
What Staff See at Login
When an employee logs into a terminal with a terminal-level Default Menu Type configured, the order entry screen opens with that view active — regardless of the employee's Job-level default. On terminals that are Unset, the employee's Job-level default applies, exactly as it does today.
Note: If a terminal's Default Menu Type is changed while an employee is logged in, the new setting takes effect at the employee's next login or session start. The active session is not affected.
