Description: Learn how to assign a course to an item the moment you add it to a ticket using the course prompt on the Workstation for Shift4 Dine.
Note: This feature is currently available only for Pilot users.
Overview
When Prompt for Course on Item Addition is enabled for an order type, the Workstation displays a course selection prompt each time an item is added to a ticket. A single tap assigns the course and dismisses the prompt, so servers can assign the correct course in the moment instead of reassigning courses after the fact.
The prompt works the same way on the Workstation and Handheld.
Before You Begin
- Setting required: Prompt for Course on Item Addition must be enabled for the ticket's order type. It can be enabled in the back office — visit the Set Up Prompt for Course on Item Addition in Shift4 Customer Hub article, or directly on the Workstation at non–Location Management sites (see below).
- Courses: The prompt lists the courses defined for your location. If none are defined, only Unassigned appears.
- Compatibility: The prompt does not appear when Quick Coursing is enabled at your location.
Enable the Prompt on the Workstation (Non–Location Management Sites)
At sites that are not managed through Shift4 Customer Hub Location Management, the setting can be configured directly on the Workstation.
- On the Workstation, go to Manager > Settings > Orders.
- Select the order type you want to edit.
- Toggle on Prompt for Course on Item Addition.
- Save your changes. The setting syncs with the back office and other devices at the location.
Note: At Location Management sites, the setting is managed in Shift4 Customer Hub Location Management and cannot be changed from the device.
Assign a Course When Adding an Item
- Start or open a ticket that uses an order type with the course prompt enabled.
- Add an item to the ticket. The course selection prompt appears, showing your location's course list and a SKIP button.
- Tap the course for the item. The selection is applied immediately, the prompt closes, and you are returned to the order screen — there is no additional OK or Confirm step.
The course you select overrides any default course already assigned to the item, so your in-the-moment choice is always respected.
Note: If several items are added in quick succession, the prompt fires for each item individually — you must resolve one prompt before the next item's prompt appears.
Skip the Prompt
To add the item without choosing a course, tap SKIP.
The prompt closes, and the item is added with its default course. If the item has no default course, it is added to Unassigned, the catch-all course for items without a course assignment.
When Multiple Prompts Apply to an Item
If an item requires other prompts in addition to the course prompt, the prompts appear in this order:
- Open Price or Manual Weight prompt (if applicable)
- Course prompt
- Special Request prompt (if applicable)
