Description: Learn how to scan a guest's e-gift card at the table using the Shift4 Dine Handheld's camera scanner.
Note: This feature is currently available only for a limited Pilot group.
Overview
Servers using the Shift4 Dine Handheld can now scan a guest's e-gift card directly at the table, rather than writing down the card number and entering it later at a fixed terminal. The Handheld's camera reads both QR codes and standard barcodes, and the scanned number automatically populates the payment field so you can complete the transaction without leaving the table.
This removes a manual, error-prone step from gift card redemption and reduces table turn time.
Note: Support for specific e-gift card providers is still being confirmed for this pilot. This article will be updated once providers are finalized.
Supported Devices
- Shift4 Dine Handheld (model A6630 or A800)
- Not supported on the Workstation and Tablet; gift card entry on those devices is unchanged
- Shift4 Dine Mobile is out of scope for this feature
Scan a Gift Card at the Table
- On the Handheld, from the ticket, select Pay, and then select Gift Card as the payment type.
- On the Gift Card payment screen, select the Scan icon, located between Check Balance and Manual Entry.
- Point the Handheld's camera at the guest's gift card QR code or barcode.
- Once the code is recognized, the card number automatically populates the payment field.
- Confirm the payment amount, and select Pay to complete the transaction.
Note: Scanning a physical mag-stripe gift card with the camera is not supported. Use the Handheld's built-in card reader for mag-stripe cards instead.
FAQs
Can I still enter a gift card number manually?
Yes. Manual Entry remains available on the same screen for cards that cannot be scanned.
Does the scanned number need to be re-typed?
No. Once the Handheld recognizes the code, the card number auto-populates the payment field. Confirm the amount and tap Pay.
Will this require staff retraining?
Minimal retraining is expected. Servers select Gift Card, select Scan, and point the camera at the code — no new workflow beyond the existing payment screen.
Note: Error handling for invalid, damaged, or expired codes is still being defined for this pilot. This section will be updated once behavior is finalized.
