Description: Learn the different ways to start or stop the Universal Transaction Gateway (UTG) Stand Alone.
Warning: Only one UTG application (utg2svc, Stand Alone, or TuneUp) can be open at any given time. Shift4 UTG and UTG Stub services must be halted before the Stand Alone counterparts can be accessed.
Note: You can't open the UTG (v2) Stand Alone unless you have stopped the UTG Services. Stopping the Universal Transaction Gateway (UTG) Service stops all active credit card processing until it is restarted or the UTG runs in Stand-Alone Mode. See Start or Stop a Service in Windows for specific instructions for each version of Windows and a full list of Shift4 services.
Shift4 Service
Warning: It is preferable to select Run as Administrator to avoid permissions issues.
- Access the the Windows Start Menu and search for Services.
- Select Run as Administrator.
Start a Service
Important: Rebooting the UTG computer will automatically start the Shift4 service.
- Select Shift4 UTG2.
- Select Start.
Stop a Service
Warning: Stopping the Universal Transaction Gateway (UTG) stops all active credit card processing until either the Shift4 UTG2 service or the UTG Stand Alone is restarted.
- Select Shift4 UTG2.
- Select Stop.
Start UTG Stand Alone
Via Windows Start Menu
Note: The appearance of the Windows button will vary depending on the version of Windows. On some versions of Windows, alternatively typing stand may display the Stand Alone program in the search results.
- Navigate to the Start or Windows menu.
- Search for UTG.
- Select UTG (v2) Stand Alone.
- Select Run as administrator.
Via Shift4 Payments Folder
- Open the Windows Start menu.
- Open the Shift4 Payments (or Shift4 Corporation) folder.
- Right-click UTG (v2) Stand Alone.
- Select More.
- Select Run as Administrator.
Via Run Command
Note: If using another directory other than C:\ change this to the directory where the UTG is located.
- Navigate to Start > Run.
- Type: c:\shift4\utg2\utg2.exe.
- Select OK.
Via File Explorer
Note: If the search box is not already visible on the system, look for a magnifying glass icon and select that to reveal the search box.
- Navigate to the UTG Stand Alone installation directory (C:\Shift4\UTG2). .
- Right-click the UTG2 application.
- Select Run as administrator.
Stop UTG Stand Alone
From within Stand Alone
- Select File.
- Select Exit.
- Select Yes when the shutdown confirmation window appears.
- If Yes is not responsive, select Override first, then select Yes.
- Wait for the Shutdown time to finish its countdown and confirm that Stand Alone has closed.

From Task Manager
- Right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager.
- Locate and highlight the Universal Transaction Gateway entry.
- Select End task.
