What is causing this Error?
When trying to start new checks in operations, "Error: The encryption key has expired. Generate a new encryption key." is received.
As of e7 4.3, encryption keys need to be rotated every 90 days. This message indicates that the encryption key has not been rotated for 90 days and has now expired.
How do I resolve this Error?
WARNING: Make sure the end of day has run and all credit card batches have been created and settled. If the encryption key is rotated, any credit card transactions that have not been placed into a batch and settled will NOT be able to be settled and the funds may not be recoverable.
Note: The generation of an encryption key requires a USB flash drive.
- Make sure there are no open checks in the system and no offline workstations, or the operation will fail.
If open checks exist after the key has already expired, refer to the Resolve “The Encryption Key Has Expired” Error When Open Checks Are Detected in Micros E7 article. - Insert a USB drive into the PC or workstation, generating the key.
- In the Configurator, navigate to the Employee form.
- Select the “DBUSER” employee.
- Navigate to the Security tab.
-
Check the “Update Enhanced Security” checkbox.
Reset the password with the following settings
- 2 lower characters
- 2 upper characters
- 2 numerical characters
- 2 special characters - Navigate to the Restaurant form.
-
On the Security tab, select Generate New Key.
The POS will warn you that the process may take over an hour. It will not. When the dialog boxes stop appearing, the process has been completed.
-
Check the workstations to confirm the encryption key errors are no longer present.
