Description: Learn how to adjust tips on transactions in Shift4 Dine, including scenarios where tips are adjusted automatically.
The Adjust Tips button is found on the Manager > Activity screen.
Internal Only:
Important: Visit the Modify Transaction not allowed article for any transactions that have failed tip adjust, otherwise known as RED TICKET.
Support Users: If you mark a ticket as resolved in the Tip Adjust screen (including Red Tickets), you'll be prompted to enter the tip amount. Ensure this matches any tip amount added or adjusted directly in Transaction Manager to ensure Workstation reporting aligns with batch and processing reporting.
Open the Tip Adjustment Screen in Shift4 Dine
Selecting Adjust Tips opens the Tip Adjustment screen, which displays all credit card payments that have not yet been finalized. Use the arrow buttons at the top of the screen to select any employee, or all employees, to enter tips for their credit card transactions.
For details on automatically including all credit card payments in the batch, visit the Finalize Tips Immediately on Shift4 Dine article.
Pending Tips Screen in Tip Adjustment
The Pending Tips screen holds all transactions that need to be finalized. Use the arrows at the top of the screen to filter transactions by user.
Add a Tip to a Transaction
- Select the ticket from the Pending Tips section to bring up the payment details on the right.
- Use the number pad to enter the tip amount.
- Select Add Tip to Payment to apply the tip to the ticket.
- The ticket moves to the Finalized Tips section, where it can still be updated if a mistake has been made.
Notes:
If tips are not enabled, the Pending Tips screen is always empty, since credit payments are finalized automatically. You can view them on the Finalize Transaction screen by selecting Finalized Tips at the top.
The system has no way of knowing whether a transaction needs a tip added, so you must review all transactions with a 0 tip and adjust them as needed.
After a transaction is finalized, it moves to the Finalized Tips screen.
Finalized Tips Screen in Tip Adjustment
The Finalized Tips screen displays all finalized transactions and lets you adjust the tip before it is batched. To adjust a finalized tip, select the transaction from the list, then select Adjust Existing Tip.
Note: Tickets paid via Shift4 Duo cannot have their tips adjusted on the Workstation. Attempting to do so results in a RED TICKET (failed tip adjust).
Completed Tips Screen in Tip Adjustment
The Completed screen displays all finalized, batched transactions and is for visibility purposes only. Users can no longer make adjustments from this screen.
Adjust Tips on Pre-Auth Transactions
Pre-authorized transactions, also called Bar Tabs, behave differently from regular transactions in Tip Adjustment. After the ticket is closed, it automatically moves to the Finalized Tips screen instead of the Pending Tips screen. You must adjust tips before batch time from the Finalized Tips screen. After batch time, the transaction moves to the Completed screen, and no further adjustments can be made on the Workstation.
Adjust Tips for Previous Day Transactions
Warning: Transactions adjusted directly in Transaction Manager or Customer Hub do not report back to the interface system that processed the original authorization or sale request. This means there could be a discrepancy between system reports if changes are made directly, since the interface reporting is bypassed.
Tip adjustments for previous day transactions that have already been settled and batched out cannot be adjusted via the Workstation terminal directly. You must make these tip adjustments via the Customer Hub or Transaction Manager using the Clone function. For more information, visit the Clone Transactions and Card Tokens in the Shift4 Customer Hub article or the Duplicate or Reprocess Transactions in Transaction Manager article, depending on the platform you use for the tip adjustment.
