Description: Learn how to calculate Tip Hints using only item subtotals, including item-level surcharges and hidden taxes, while excluding discounts, ticket-level surcharges, gratuities, and taxes.
Previously, Tip Hints were calculated from the Net subtotal, which included discounts, ticket-level surcharges, gratuities, and taxes. This new setting gives you more control over how Tip Hints are calculated, making it easier to align tip suggestions with item-level totals.
Location
On the Workstation, navigate to Manager > Settings > Business > Advanced and enable the toggle for Calculate Tip Hints on Subtotals Only.
How It Works
- When Enabled: Tip Hints are calculated using only item-level amounts (including item surcharges and hidden taxes).
- Excludes: Discounts, ticket-level surcharges, gratuities, and taxes.
- When Disabled: Tip Hints continue to calculate from the Net subtotal, including discounts, ticket-level surcharges, gratuities, and taxes.
Examples
The following examples show Tip Hints printed on a Guest Check for the same ticket:
Setting OFF:
Tip Hints are calculated on the Net item subtotal after discounts, plus ticket-level surcharges and tax.
-
Example calculation:
$100 − $50 + $1 = $51 item subtotal
$51 + 10% tax = $56
20% of $56 = $11.20
Setting ON:
Tip Hints are calculated based solely on the item subtotal before discounts.
-
Example calculation:
20% of $100 = $20
Scope
This setting is global in Shift4 Dine and affects:
- Printed Tip Hints on Guest Check Receipts, Transaction Receipts, and Credit Slips
- Tip prompts displayed on Tablet, Handheld, and Customer-facing Display
