What is the National Type Evaluation Program (NTEP) Certification?
The National Type Evaluation Program (NTEP) is a certification program that verifies the performance and accuracy of weighing and measuring devices used in commerce. Its primary purpose is to ensure that these devices meet stringent standards set by regulatory bodies, thereby promoting consistency, accuracy, and reliability in measurements.
Why does NTEP certification matter for my business?
If you sell products by weight (e.g., produce, bulk goods, meat), federal and state law often requires that your weighing system be NTEP-certified. Non-certified systems may lead to fines or business shutdowns.
How can I tell if my POS system is NTEP certified?
If you are using a POS system and scale provided or approved by the provider, it is already part of the certified setup. The NTEP Certificate of Conformance (CC) number is displayed on your SkyTab POS devices on the landing page. Long pressing on the CC number on the SkyTab terminal will display the specific Manufacturer, Model, and Version that are certified (but that’s mainly for auditors - not you).
Do I need to do anything to maintain the certification?
No. The POS provider maintains the NTEP certification. As a merchant, you are covered as long as you are using the certified hardware and software combination provided to you.
Will software updates affect my compliance?
The POS provider ensures that any updates remain compliant with NTEP regulations. You don’t need to manage or monitor changes—everything is handled on your behalf.
Can I use a different scale with the system?
Scales themselves are NTEP certified and integrate with the POS system. Any NTEP-certified scale can be used, but it may not be compatible with the SkyTab POS software. If you need to switch or add a scale, reach out to support to ensure it’s approved and compliant.
Do I need to apply for my own NTEP certification?
No. Certification is held by the POS and scale providers. As long as you're using their certified solution, you're covered and legally allowed to sell items by weight.
My scale has been stuck on “Waiting for weight from scale…” or “Unable to establish connection to scale”. What should I do?
Check your scale to make sure it is on Type 5. If your scale is on one of the other unsupported types, it will display one of these errors.
To set/check the scale type:
- Turn the power to the scale off.
- While pressing the # key, turn on the power.
- The current Type will show on the scale display.
- Press the lb/oz button to change the Type until you see Type 5.
- Press the Zero button to save.
Why can’t I configure my POS to allow a “No Receipt” option on the POS or Customer-Facing Display?
NTEP compliance requires a printed record to be provided for ALL transactions.
Why can’t I manually enter the weight of an item on the POS?
To stay compliant with NTEP standards, all item weights must come directly from a certified scale. Allowing employees to type in a weight by hand could lead to mistakes or intentional misrepresentation.
