Description: Learn how to apply Pre-Modifiers to modifiers on the Workstation for Shift4 Dine, see how they appear on tickets and kitchen devices, and understand how reporting tracks Pre-Modifier combinations.
Before using Pre-Modifiers on the Workstation, Pre-Modifiers and Pre-Modifier Sets must be created in Shift4 Dine Customer Hub. Visit the Configure Pre-Modifiers and Pre-Modifier Sets on the Customer Hub article for setup instructions.
Overview
Pre-Modifiers appear above the modifier sets for items that have at least one assigned modifier set. They prefix the modifier name, reflect any price adjustments on tickets, and print or display on kitchen devices according to their configuration.

Handheld example:- The Pre-Modifier will prefix the modifier on all receipts and tickets.
- Price adjustments (configured in Shift4 Dine Customer Hub) automatically apply to the ticket.
- Repeat for additional Pre-Modifiers as needed.
Pre-Modifiers on Kitchen Devices
- Kitchen Printers: Print as a prefix to their attached modifier.
-
Kitchen Display System: Display as a prefix to their attached modifier.
- Print Red/Bold: If enabled on the Pre-Modifier, modifier, or modifier set, the Pre-Modifier and modifier will display or print in red or bold.
Note: Preparable items mapped to modifiers still count in the Display All Day view when combined with a Pre-Modifier. For example, if “Bacon” is a Prep item, then EXTRA Bacon, SIDE Bacon, LITE Bacon, or NO Bacon will each count toward the Prep item total.
How Pre-Modifiers Affect Reporting
- Pre-Modifiers appear on any report that displays modifiers, such as Sales Summary by Modifier on the Customer Hub.
- Each unique Pre-Modifier/modifier combination is reported separately with its own quantity, average sale price, and totals.
- Example: Ketchup and LITE Ketchup will each appear as separate lines in the report.
Notes:
- Pre-Modifiers can only be used on items that have modifier sets assigned.
- Price adjustments applied to Pre-Modifiers cannot reduce a modifier below $0.
- Pre-Modifiers do not appear in Online Ordering, third-party delivery platforms, Kiosk, or Shift4 Duo.
