Description: Learn to understand how default modifiers behave with online ordering and what limitations to consider when configuring your menu.
Note: This feature is currently available only for Pilot users.
Default Modifiers improve in-store ordering workflows, but they behave differently when used with online ordering and have some important limitations to consider.
For standard POS behavior and setup, visit the Default Modifiers Overview and Configuration article.
Online Ordering Behavior
Default modifiers are not pre-selected in Online Ordering or third-party ordering platforms. Guests must manually select modifiers, even if they are configured as defaults on the POS. When received on the POS, default modifiers behave like standard modifiers rather than true default modifiers.
When online orders are received by the POS, default modifier settings are not fully respected in version 1.124.0:
- Selected modifiers will always display, regardless of display settings
- Unselected default modifiers are omitted and will not appear as “NO [modifier],” even if the “Prefix default modifier with NO if deselected” setting is enabled.
This behavior applies to the POS ticket preview, printed kitchen tickets, and the Kitchen Display System.
System Limitations
There are a few additional limitations to keep in mind:
- Nested modifiers cannot be set as the default
- Bulk editing is not compatible with default modifiers and may overwrite assignments
Best Practices
For best results, use default modifiers for standard recipes such as burger toppings or sandwich condiments.
They work well alongside pre-modifiers (like EXTRA or SIDE) to provide flexibility. When combined with the appropriate display settings, default modifiers can also reduce or eliminate the need for dedicated “NO” modifier options.
In many cases, you may no longer need a “NO” pre-modifier when using default modifiers with the appropriate display settings.
