Description: Learn how to ring up, edit, and review combo items on the Workstation for Shift4 Dine, and understand how combo sales appear in pricing and reporting.
Note: This feature is currently available only for Pilot users.
Once Combos are configured in Multi-Location Management, it appears on the Workstation as a menu item button. Here's what to expect when ringing up a combo, and how combos affect tickets, reporting, and other workflows.
Ring Up a Combo
- From the order screen on the Workstation, tap the combo item button to open the Combo Builder.
- In each slot, tap an item to select it. Slots with a default selection are already pre-filled — you only need to change a selection if the guest requests something different.
- If an item has modifiers, the modifier screen appears before moving to the next slot. A small triangle icon on an item button indicates modifiers are available.
- A red circle on a slot means a required selection has not been completed.
- Tap Continue to advance through remaining slots.
- Once all required slots are filled, tap Continue from within a modifier selection screen, or tap Show Menu to exit the combo builder.
Tip: Use Default Modifiers on standard items to pre-select common modifier choices and speed up combo orders.
The ticket preview shows the combo as a single line item with child items indented below it. Any upcharges appear on the relevant child item lines.
Example ticket display:
The subtotal for this combo is $18.99 ($13.99 base + $1.00 + $4.00 in upcharges).
Edit a Combo Before Sending
To change a selection before the ticket is sent, tap the combo item on the ticket to reopen the Combo Builder and make adjustments.
Pricing
The base combo price appears on the ticket. Upcharges for premium item selections or modifier add-ons appear as separate line amounts on their respective item lines. The ticket subtotal reflects the full combined total.
Reporting
Combo sales are reported at the child item level, not the combo level. When a combo is sold, the base combo price is allocated across each selected child item proportionally based on their individual standalone prices. Each child item reports its allocated share under its own revenue class and department.
Example allocation for a $13.99 combo:
| Item | Regular Price | Share | Allocated Combo Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bacon Burger | $10.00 | 63% | $8.81 |
| Fries | $4.00 | 25% | $3.50 |
| Soft Drink | $2.00 | 12% | $1.68 |
| Total | $16.00 | $13.99 |
Upcharges and modifier costs report on top of the allocated amount for that item. Discounts and surcharges applied to the combo are also allocated proportionally across child items.
Note: If "Use Combo Item Tax Rules" is enabled, the combo item's tax configuration drives the tax rate for the whole combo. Sales dollars are still reported at the child item level regardless of this setting.
Kitchen Printers
Combo items are not routed directly to kitchen printers. Child items route to their own assigned printers as usual. The combo item name prints as a header above its child items so kitchen staff can identify which items belong together.
Kitchen Display System (KDS)
Combo items appear on KDS grouped under the combo name. Child items are bumped individually. The combo name header clears once the last child item in the combo is bumped.
Example KDS ticket:
Current KDS limitations:
- Items within a combo are bumped individually, not as a group.
- Combo grouping is not supported in KDS List View.
- Combos are not grouped when using Group By course, seat, department, or revenue class.
- Combo item special requests do not appear on KDS.
- If two identical combos are on the same ticket, they are numbered to distinguish them.
Note: These KDS limitations will be addressed in a future release of Shift4 Dine.
Guest Checks, Receipts, and Customer-facing Display
The combo name and price appear at the top, with child items indented below and upcharges shown inline. Individual child item prices are not displayed unless they carry an upcharge.
