Description: Learn how to configure the Modifier Skip feature in Shift4 Dine to allow bartenders to add items to a ticket without optional modifier prompts while preserving the standard modifier flow for other job roles.
Note: This feature is currently available only for Pilot users.
Overview
The Modifier Skip feature lets bartenders add drink items to a ticket without being interrupted by optional modifier prompts, while still prompting servers for those optional modifiers when ordering the same items. This speeds up order entry during high-volume bar service without requiring duplicate menu items.
Note: Both steps in this article must be completed for Modifier Skip to take effect. Enabling the job permission without flagging the item, or vice versa, will not change modifier behavior.
The feature is controlled by two settings that must both be active for the behavior to take effect:
- Modifier Skip: A job role permission assigned to bartender job types or any other desired job type.
- Modifier Skip Item: An item-level setting applied to individual menu items.
How It Works
When you add an item to a ticket, the POS checks two conditions:
- Does your job role have the Modifier Skip permission?
- Is the item flagged as a Modifier Skip Item?
If both are true, the POS applies the following logic for each modifier set on that item:
- Optional modifier sets: Skipped automatically; the prompt is not displayed.
- Required modifier sets: The prompt is displayed, and a selection must be made before the item can be added.
- Required modifier sets with a default selected: The default is applied automatically, and the prompt is not displayed.
If either condition is false, the job role does not have the permission, or the item is not flagged as a Modifier Skip Item, the modifier behavior follows the standard POS flow.

FAQs
Will bartenders still be able to manually edit modifiers after adding an item?
Yes. If a bartender adds a Modifier Skip Item and later needs to adjust modifiers, they can tap the item on the ticket to open the modifier screen and make changes, just as they would for any other item.
Does Modifier Skip affect how the item appears on receipts or reports?
No. Modifier Skip only affects whether the modifier prompt is displayed during order entry. Any modifiers that are applied, including auto-applied defaults, still appear on the ticket and receipt, and in reporting, as they normally would.
Can I apply Modifier Skip Item to any item, not just bar drinks?
Yes. The flag can be applied to any menu item. The intended use case is bar drinks where bartenders need fast entry without optional modifier interruptions, but you can use it wherever that workflow applies to your operation.
What happens if a modifier set is required and has multiple items set as defaults?
If the configured number of defaults meets or exceeds the minimum selection requirement for that modifier set, the requirement is satisfied, and the prompt is not displayed. If the defaults only partially satisfy the requirement — for example, one default is set, but two selections are required — the prompt still appears.
