Description: Learn how to enable the Prompt for Course on Item Addition setting for an order type in the Shift4 Dine Customer Hub or Shift4 Customer Hub Location Management, so staff are asked to select a course the moment an item is added to a ticket.
Note: This feature is currently available only for Pilot users.
Overview
Prompt for Course on Item Addition is an order type–level setting. When it's enabled, the Workstation and Handheld display a course selection prompt each time a staff member adds an item to a ticket. The course the server selects is applied immediately and overrides any default course assigned to the item.
Enabling the prompt lets servers assign the correct course at the time of ordering rather than reassigning it after the fact — especially valuable in full-service and multi-course dining environments.
The setting is available in both Shift4 Customer Hub and Shift4 Customer Hub Location Management, and it appears in the same place under Order Type settings in each.
Before You Begin
- Courses required: Your location must have Courses configured. If no courses are defined, the prompt displays only Unassigned.
- Compatibility: Prompt for Course is not compatible with Quick Coursing. If Quick Coursing is enabled at your location, the course prompt will not appear.
- Order types: The setting can be enabled on any order type, and is configured per order type.
- Devices: The prompt appears on the Workstation and Handheld. It is not available on Shift4 Duo.
- Alternative configuration path: At non–Location Management sites, the setting can also be enabled directly on the Workstation. Visit the Use Prompt for Course on the Workstation for the Shift4 Dine article for details.
Enable the Prompt in Shift4 Dine Customer Hub
- Log in to the Customer Hub and select Shift4 Dine > Menu > Order Types.
- Select the order type you want to edit.
- Toggle on Prompt for Course on Item Addition.
- Select Save. The setting syncs to the Workstations and Handhelds at the location.
Repeat Steps 2–4 for each order type that should prompt for a course.
Enable the Prompt in Shift4 Customer Hub Location Management
In Shift4 Customer Hub Location Management, the setting works the same way and is found in the same spot in the Order Type settings. The difference is that you can manage it at the enterprise level (the default for all locations) or at the individual location level, and a location-level setting overrides the enterprise-level default for that location.
- Log in to Shift4 Customer Hub Location Management.
- Choose where to manage the setting: stay at the enterprise level to set the default for all locations, or select an individual location to configure it.
- Go to the Order Types settings page and select the order type you want to edit.
- Toggle on Prompt for Course on Item Addition.
- Select Save.
Enterprise-level changes apply to all locations that have not set their own override; location-level changes apply to that location only and sync to its Workstations and Handhelds.
How It Works During Service
Once enabled, adding an item to a ticket that uses the configured order type opens a course selection prompt listing the location's pre-defined courses, along with a SKIP button. Tapping a course applies it immediately — there is no additional confirmation step. Tapping "SKIP" adds the item with its default course, or Unassigned if no default exists.
