Configure Receipt Tip Hints for the Tablet

Description: Learn how to configure Tip Hints for the Tablet, including Global Tip Hints, Override Tip Hints, Default Tip, and printed receipt tip-hint lines.

Before You Begin

• Confirm a receipt printer has been created and assigned to the Tablet's station before continuing. This is the most common reason Tip Hints fail to appear on a Tablet.
• Tip Hints only display on-screen if Prompt for Tips is also enabled for the Tablet's payment device. See Enable Tip Prompt Per Payment Device for the Tablet.
• If you manage multiple printers, set Global Tip Hints in the Shift4 Dine Customer Hub first, then override at the printer level only where needed. See Centralized Tip Configuration in the Shift4 Dine Customer Hub.

Configure Tip Hints

1. Navigate to Manager > Settings > Hardware > Printers/KDS.
2. Select the receipt printer assigned to the Tablet's station from the list on the left.
3. Select the Tip Hints tab.
4. Review Global Tip Hints — these reflect the defaults set in the Customer Hub and are read-only here unless overridden.
5. To set values specific to this Tablet, turn on Override Tip Hints, then enter up to three percentages in the Tip Hints fields (for example, 10.00 / 15.00 / 20.00).
6. (Optional) Under Default Tip, select which of the three amounts should be pre-highlighted on the guest payment screen.
7. Select Save.

Show Tip Hints on Printed Receipts (optional)

The Tip Hints entered above control the Tablet's on-screen tip prompt. To also print suggested tip amounts on paper receipts:

1. On the same Tip Hints tab, turn on Show Tip Hints.
2. Select which receipt types should include the tip-hint line: Guest Check Receipt, Transaction Receipt, and/or Credit Slip.
3. (Optional) Use the Show Calculated Totals dropdown to choose whether those printed receipts also show the calculated dollar amount next to each tip percentage.
4. Select Save.

What Guests See

Once configured, the Tablet's payment screen shows the percentage buttons — each with its calculated dollar amount — plus Custom Tip and No Tip options. Selecting Custom Tip opens a numeric keypad for entering a specific amount.

Notes

• Global Tip Hints require Shift4 Dine v1.120.0 or later. Printers created before that version keep their existing settings and default to Override Tip Hints.
• Show Tip Hints (and its receipt-type checkboxes) must always be set at the individual printer level — it cannot be configured centrally in the Customer Hub.
