Kitchen Display System 4.10.0
Date: July 15, 2022
Enhancements:
-
This version of Kitchen Display System iOS is compatible with iOS 15. It can be used in fresh installs on devices running iOS 15, and it can also be used in existing devices - customers need to update the OS first then update the Kitchen Display System application.
-
This release improves the Order Status Board (OSB) functionality, expanding customers’ ability to control the content on the screen. The Kitchen tab on Vendors now offers 4 additional flags (when OSB is enabled on the Venue and active on the Vendor):
-
Default: READY FOR PICKUP
-
Default: PREPARING
-
Full Name
-
First Name, Last Initial
-
Show both sections - OSB has both Preparing and Completed sections
-
Only Show Completed section
-
-
Completed Section Name - allows customers to define the text that OSB displays for that section.
-
In Progress Section Name - allows customers to define the text that OSB displays for that section.
-
Customer Name Format - allows customers to select how customer names will appear on each order.
-
Layout - controls what sections OSB displays on the screen.
-
Kitchen Display System iOS now offers support to the Item Details flag (configured in the Kitchen tab of each Vendor).
-
Display the Kitchen Name of each item (as configured in Connect).
-
Allow users to tap on items in the Order Details popup, displaying the Item Details popup (with the large item image and description).
-
Display each item with the Item Name (instead of the Kitchen Name, as configured in Connect).
-
Prevent users from tapping on items in the Order Details popup. In this scenario, the Item Details popup is no longer accessible.
-
-
When this flag is enabled, Kitchen Display System will:
-
When this flag is disabled, Kitchen Display System will:
Defects:
- With this release, Kitchen Display System no longer prints blank chits (or duplicate chits for combined checks).
- This release resolves multiple crashes.
Known Issues:
- Items only appear in Kitchen Display System with the Kitchen Name when the orders are submitted directly to the System appear with the Item Name. This issue will be resolved by a Connect update (and a subsequent System release).
- When showing orders from Interact X (and configured with at least one subvendor printer), Kitchen Display System iOS prints duplicate chits. This issue will be resolved by an Interact X update.
Limitations:
-
Connect is still implementing full support for the New Modifiers format, forcing the System to display order content similar to our Legacy Modifiers (with only one level of Modifiers under each Parent Item).
-
Connect currently has a timeout/performance issue when delivering high volumes of orders to the System. Locations that regularly have high order volumes should adjust the new Fetch Cycle setting to mitigate the problem until the Connect performance is restored.
-
Connect also has a timeout/performance issue when delivering high volumes of items to the Kitchen Display System. Locations that do not require images on the Order Details popup should set the new Item Details setting to No (Vendor > Kitchen).
-
Hold and Fire functionality only works at the Subvendor level with printers.
-
Subvendor logins can only contain one Subvendor.
-
When running with Subvendors, customers must have their System's Completion Mode set to Master Bump - this is due to recent limitations implemented in Connect 11.8.
-
Without this setting, System orders move back (from Completed to Pending) when an order is updated in other System devices.
-
Currently Interact X 1.17 and 1.18 cannot send orders correctly to the System on Dual mode.
Kitchen Display System 4.9.0
Date: November 2, 2021
Enhancements:
- This version of the System iOS is compatible with iOS 15. It can be used in fresh installs on devices running iOS 15, and it can also be used in existing devices - customers need to update the OS first then update the application.
- The functionality around Date Filter on the System was enhanced to cover some of the original gaps in this feature. Here are the details for the new behavior…
- Initial log resets the filter to Today.
- Automated Date Rollover (based on Venue settings) resets the filter to Today.
- If the user logs in prior to the Day Start, the filter is set FROM [now] TO Day Start +24h.
- If the user logs in after the Day Start, the filter is set FROM Venue Day Start TO Day Start +24h.
-
This version offers the ability to define which orders will be retrieved on the device, based on the new Fetch Cycle flag that is now available in the Settings screen.
- Open Hours (default)
- 60 min
- 90 min
- 120 min
- If the user changes the date picker to previous dates, Fetch Cycle is automatically returned to Open Hours.
- Returning the date picker to Today should re-enable the flag and adjust the call to Connect.
- This flag was designed for use in high-volume locations (e.g. that receive 10,000+ orders per day). We have seen limitations in Connect in those scenarios - see Limitations below for more information.
- The flag affects both Pending and Completed orders.
- The setting offers these values…
- Open Hours is what we had until now. The other values adjust the System order retrieval from Connect (for the current business day) to only those submitted over the last n minutes.
- Note that this only affects the System when the Date Picker is set to Today…
- Kitchen Display System iOS now allows the user to Submit/Upload Embrace Session Logs without requiring a restart. When the user taps the new End Current Logging Session button on the Settings screen, System displays a confirmation dialog for the user.
Fixes
- The OSB screen now displays correctly.
- Kitchen Display System once again shows and prints items on Sub-vendor orders, following their Connect assignment.
Limitations:
- Connect is still implementing full support for the New Modifiers format, forcing the System to display order content similar to our Legacy Modifiers (with only one level of Modifiers under each Parent Item).
- Connect currently has a timeout/performance issue when delivering high volumes of orders to the System. Locations that regularly have high order volumes should utilize the new Fetch Cycle setting to mitigate the problem until the Connect performance is restored.
- Hold and Fire functionality only works at the Subvendor level with printers.
- Subvendor logins can only contain one Subvendor.
- When running with Subvendors, customers must have their System Completion Mode set to Master Bump - this is due to recent limitations implemented in Connect 11.8.
- Without this setting, orders move back (from Completed to Pending) when an order is updated in other devices.
- Without this setting, orders move back (from Completed to Pending) when an order is updated in other devices.
- Currently Interact X 1.17 and 1.18 cannot send orders correctly to the Kitchen Display System on Local and Dual mode.

Date: September 3, 2020
Enhancements
-
Order Status Board
- The Order Status Board (OSB) is a convenient visual medium that keeps customers informed on the status of their order as they wait for it to be prepared.
- With the OSB feature enabled (from within the Kitchen Display System application settings the system can now display an external display on a TV through Airplay to an Apple TV or an HDMI connection to the Kitchen Display System iPad.
- When users update the order status from the Kitchen Display System, the external OSB display automatically updates the status in real time.
- With OSB enabled, a new “Delivered” order status is now available on Kitchen Display System - this status is used to track that the customer has received their order.
- Kitchen Display System updates the orders on OSB to inform the customer that their order is being “Prepared” (In Progress status on Kitchen Display System) or is “Ready for Pick Up” (Completed status on Kitchen Display System). Orders set to the Delivered status do not show on OSB.
Limitations
OSB is only compatible with Kitchen Display System Vendors and does not support Sub Vendor accounts
Kitchen Display System 4.1.0
Date: September 1, 2020
Enhancements
-
Order Type Routing to Sub Vendor IP Printers
- Users now have the ability to assign Order Types to Sub Vendor IP printers.
- When Order Types are assigned to the IP printer, items related to the order (with the assigned order type) will route and print at the specified Sub Vendor IP printer.
- Orders Types that are not assigned to the Sub Vendor IP printer will not route/print. Sub Vendor IP printer routing via Order Types is not supported in Connect Mode communication. Order Type routing cannot be set up for Kitchen Display System Vendor IP printers, only Sub Vendor IP printers.
- Example
- Expo Kitchen Display System accepting multiple Order Types (Delivery vs Pick Up orders)
- All Items are assigned to both Sub Vendors
- 1 Sub Vendor Assigned Order Type “Delivery”
- 1 Sub Vendor Assigned Order Type “Pick Up”
- Sub Vendor Items will route to the appropriate Sub Vendor IP printer based on Order Type assigned and will block Order types that are not assigned to the Sub Vendor IP printer.
-
Auto Retry Printer Failures
- Within the Kitchen Display System settings page, users can now enable the Auto Retry toggle to force the Kitchen Display System to keep attempting to contact the printer if the print job fails. If the setting is disabled, the user will be prompted with an error message to cancel the print job or retry.

- Pending - Newest Orders On Top
- Pending - Oldest Orders On Top
- Completed - Newest Orders On Top
- Completed - Oldest Orders On Top
- Print Per Chit allows the system the ability to print kitchen receipts based on the numbers of items related to an order. When operations utilizes sticky paper users have the ability to adhere the kitchen label to the item to help facilitate pick up/delivery orders. Ex 1 of 5 Coffee, 2 of 5 Banana Bread ….
- Kitchen Display System Layouts
- Waterfall - Waterfall mode dynamically adapts the size of the order displayed on the Kitchen Display System based on the size of the order.
- Grid - Presents orders based on the 4x2 Grid style. Order information is limited to the sizing of the grid and does not dynamically adapt. Users must click on the order to see its full details if it's too large to fit within the grid parameters .
- Tall Grid - Presents orders based on a 4x1 Grid style. The Order display containers are elongated to provide more area to view order details. The grid does not dynamically adapt to the order
- SMS Notification Enhancements (Compatible with Connect 10.23.0 +) Users have the ability to set up custom SMS messaging based Kitchen Display System Vendor and Sub-Vendor fulfillment status
- Kitchen Display System Vendor - In Progress

Activate X Related Enhancements (13.0.1 +)
Kitchen Display System Modes
- Connect Mode: Allows for users to route their orders through Connect based communication.
- Local Mode: Local Mode allows users to define Terminal and Printers that the order should route to based on a Static IP address within a Local Area Network. Local mode or “Offline Kitchen Display System” enables operators to route kitchen orders directly from ActivateX to Kitchen Display System without having to rely on network connectivity to Connect.
- Connect + Local Mode: This new communication mode to the Kitchen Display System is a merger of Local and Connect based communication. Operators can have their store/venue ActivateX terminals running in local mode to reduce the risk of network failure and still route orders generated from Connect to the Kitchen Display System pending network stability (ex Mobile Orders generated from 3rd Party Ordering Platforms). Compatible only with Non-Check Orders.
Kitchen Display System Completion Modes
- Independent: If the Kitchen Display System Vendor Login is used across multiple devices the order status can be updated independently on each device without influencing the other devices.
- Master Vendor: Order fulfillment status on Kitchen Display System Vendor will automatically force an update to related Sub-Vendor orders.
- Sub Vendor Completion Required: Orders routed to a sub-vendor must be completed before the Kitchen Display System Vendor is allowed to complete a related order.
Dynamic Order Modes
- Fire on Payment: Orders are submitted to the kitchen when the order is tendered with a payment type.
- Fire on Total: Orders are routed to the Kitchen when a user begins the checkout process or submits items to a check.
- Fire on Next: Once an initial item is added to the cart the subsequent items added will trigger the submission of the previous item added to the cart to the Kitchen Display System. The last item in the cart is sent to the Kitchen Display System by submitting an item to a check or by proceeding to checkout.
Order Types
- Users can define operational Order Types, associate them to orders, and pass them to the Kitchen Display System to provide greater context to kitchen operations on how an order should be prepared. Ex To Go, In-Store, For Here, Mobile, Call-In.
- Within the Kitchen Display System settings, users can limit what order types appear on the Kitchen Display System by selecting an order type filter ex. View orders routed to the device that are assigned with the order type “To Go” and “Mobile.”

Kitchen Display System 3.13
Enhancements:
- A small update has been added to Kitchen Display System order details due to implementation of Restaurants functionality on Activate.
Currently, when you finalize a Restaurant check order on Activate, Kitchen Display System should display seat number and table number, or customer name on a printed runner chit.
Example1:
Activate: I open a Restaurant check order (opening at table)
Kitchen Display System: The printed chit should include information about table name and seat number.
Example2:
Activate: I open a Restaurant check order (opening with Guest name)
Kitchen Display System: The printed chit should include the Guest name and seat number.
Note! When there're both table name and customers name given on Activate when opening a check order, table name always wins => it should always be displayed instead of a guest name.
Fixed:
- Crash after scanning barcodes.
- Running time (clock for the order) not updating.
Kitchen Display System 3.9
Enhancements
-
Kitchen Display System Auto-fire
- Auto-Fire – a new feature that allows kitchen staff to prepare orders for a later time.
- To make it work on Kitchen Display System, you need to have Pickup Time Selection enabled on Connect. To do it go to Connect > Vendors > (click on your Kitchen Display System Vendor) > Vendor Settings
-
1.2 EXAMPLE USE:
- order is placed at 10:00 am (SDK) for pickup at 11:30 am
- Prep Time (Connect) is set to 10 min
- Next, this order goes to Kitchen Display System to the “Upcoming” tab. Pickup time – prep time => 11:20 am.
2. UPCOMING ORDERS FLOW
1. Client makes an order (via SDK) and chooses pickup time at i.e. 11:30 am
Note! The feature works only for orders with a chosen pickup time (SDK)
Make an order > choose Pickup Time > confirm with “OK” > Result:Pickup Time is selected
SDK screens
2. SDK checkout ends in success and order goes to Kitchen Display System
3. Your order goes to Kitchen Display System “Upcoming” tab. That’s only for orders with pickup time set.
4. Some changes in order’s view
5. Possible actions when an order in “Upcoming” status.
-> When an order is “Upcoming”, you can change the status to “Pending” only
-> Then, when your order is in “Pending” status, you can change it to: “In Process” or “Completed”
6. Depending on the prep Time settings, the negative time value (for order’s completion) displayed on the Upcoming order is counted differently.
There are 3 definitions that may help you understand the difference:
pickup Time = the ability to order food for later on the current day for a short-term completion like i.e. 60 minutes (config in Connect > Vendors > Vendor > Vendor Settings). This is an SDK setting
prep Time = time needed for the kitchen (Kitchen Display System) to prepare a given order (config in Connect > Vendors > Vendor > Vendor Settings). This is Kitchen Display System setting. Once it is set in Connect, it is the default prep Time for all Kitchen Display System orders
showTime = Time value defined by: pickup Time- Vendor prep Time. When showTime >= (bigger or equal) to now, Kitchen Display System order automatically moves to Pending page
Kitchen Display System 3.8.1
Changed
- Network printers connectivity support after crash recovery.
- Improved support for multiple iPads.
Fixed
- Kitchen Display System Chit Printing.
Kitchen Display System 3.8
New
-
Kitchen Display System Catalog Permission Parameters added. Using Permission Sets from Connect, Kitchen Display System functioning and visibility of some buttons can be changed.
1.1 Admin PIN may be required on the deactivate button so a kitchen user does not accidentally remove an item from the menu. Set the below permission to YES if you want to restrict the Disabled button on Kitchen Display System to those users who have access to PIN.
- Permission = YES and then, how it works on Kitchen Display System:
1.2 Decide if the deactivate button (for items) should be visible in Kitchen Display System > Catalog. By default, it is set to YES = visible. It can be changed here:
And how it looks on Kitchen Display System (e.g. permission = NO)
1.3 => Decide whether the sold-out button should be visible (Kitchen Display System > Catalog). By default, it is set to YES = visible. It can be changed here:
2. The second thing we’ve added is handling network printers. Printing does not need to be set anywhere, it’s a default feature.
Changed
- Refunding weight items. In the 3.8 version, it will be possible to refund such items without choosing their quantity again. So it will function in the same way as for single quantity “ordinary” items.
Kitchen Display System displays the order as Partially Refunded. The actions that can be taken now are:
– Tap order
– Tap Issue Refund:
a) Individual Item = Cancel the existing refund
b) Entire Order = Refund the whole order (if only partial refund has been made). - Tab Orders and regular orders view enhanced. Until now, Kitchen Display System had occasional problems when there were two such orders made simultaneously. Currently, it is improved and works fine.
- Receipts. To prevent any double printing, we’ve decided to introduce using a database instead of text files for printouts.
- Printing receipts after crash optimization.
Fixed
- Kitchen Display System Catalog issues.
- Chit printing.
Kitchen Display System 3.7
New
- New and handy feature – Scanning printed receipt barcodes.Currently, it is possible for clients to scan a barcode for the given Order ID placed on a printed ticket using Infinea (type of a swiper). Once the barcode is scanned successfully, the correct order shows up on the screen then.
Fixed
- Some issues with orders’ status.
Kitchen Display System 3.6
New
- Two colored timer indicating order status on main Pending view added. The order indicator turns red after 5 mins by default from making an order (unless it’s set differently see point 2)
- It is possible to configure the default time (5mins) from Connect (Vendors). Subvendor settings,in this case, are the same as assigned Vendor’s. How to change the default time? “Blink Intervals” set from Connect come in handy. Go to: Connect>Vendors>Choose or create your Vendor>Vendor Settings tab
-
Pickup text shows up (once the seat is confirmed) when the delivery order is made. Well, that includes, of course, setting Vendor Role on Connect. To do it, go to Connect>Vendor Roles>GENERAL (see the screen below)
If “Pos Pickup Vendor” marked YES – Kitchen Display System displays: - Kitchen Display System version number placed in the right bottom corner.
- Need more space for better visibility of orders? New layout: left menu hidden until you slide from left to open it. It can be set from Connect here: Connect>Options>Permission Sets>Kitchen Display System>Left menu hidden by default. Then, such a permission set should be applied to a given account.
-
PIN is required to manage settings, catalog, and admin sections. It is also duplicated for Kitchen Display System subvendor accounts. New options are permission sets configured from Connect. Go to: Connect>Options>Permissions Sets>Kitchen Display System:
“Require PIN for settings page” setting added. To do it, mark it “YES” and Save. The next step is to assign the correct permission to a Vendor. To do it go to: Connect>Accounts>Vendor>choose your Vendor> ”Edit Account” tab opens (like this one below)
and Save Changes.
Changed
- Visibility of modifiers and wizard items.
- App behavior when printing after a crash. Now, when AutoPrint is ON, orders are printed automatically even if a crash occurred. There’s no need to log in again after a crash.
- Wristbands: Admin section>finalize day view updated with wristbands use.
- Wristbands handling: finalize day view updated with total wristbands use; credit info has new keys excluding wristbands from credits; total wristbands line added to Totals print.
-
Update wait time changed. Basically, a client orders pizza using SDK, the restaurant receives the order and using Kitchen Display System responds with expected wait time (e.g. 15 min).
