Description: Setting up and using the Order Type filter for Taxes on the SkyTab POS system allows you to apply taxes only when a specified Order Type is applied to a ticket.
Feature Overview
In order to start utilizing this feature, you must first ensure that Taxes are correctly applied to your menu items either directly or through their assigned Revenue Classes. Review the article for Accounting Settings.
The Filtering Taxes by Order Type feature is enabled on a per tax basis under Manager > Settings > Accounting > Taxes. Each tax can be filtered to one or more Order Types. By default, a tax is not restricted to any Order Type and will therefore apply to ALL Order Types. The following examples should provide an understanding of how this feature works:
Tax 1 - 10%
Tax 2 - 20%
Tax 3 - 30%
Tax 4 - 40%
Item A - $1.00
Scenario 1: All Taxes match between the Item and Order Type
- Tax 1 and Tax 2 are assigned to Item A
- Tax 1 and Tax 2 are assigned to the active Order Type
- Result: Both Tax 1 and Tax 2 are applied. The tax Total is $0.30
Scenario 2: One Tax matches between the Item and Order Type
- Tax 1 and Tax 2 are assigned to Item A
- Tax 2 and Tax 3 are assigned to the active Order Type
- Result: Only Tax 2, the matching Tax, is applied. The tax Total is $0.20
Scenario 3: No Taxes match between the Item and Order Type
- Tax 1 and Tax 2 are assigned to Item A
- Tax 3 and Tax 4 are assigned to the active Order Type
- Result: No Taxes are applied. The tax Total is $0.00
Setup Taxes by Order Type
To set up a Tax to be assigned to an Order Type:
- Navigate to Manager > Settings > Accounting.
- Select the Taxes tab at the top.
- Under Filter Tax By Order Type (Optional), select Tap to edit to open the Select Order Types dialog box.
- Tap the Order Type(s) you would like to add to this tax.
- Press OK to close the dialog.
- Press Save to commit the changes.
Note: If you use the Filter Tax By Order Type option, the Tax will ONLY apply if the selected Order Types are added to a ticket. Selecting an Order Type that was not specified results in the Tax not applying.
To stop filtering a Tax, return to the Tax Settings screen by:
- Navigate to Manager > Settings > Accounting.
- Select the Taxes tab at the top.
- Under Filter Tax By Order Type (Optional), select Tap to edit to open the Select Order Types dialog box.
- Remove ALL Order Types from the right side of the screen; this disables the filter, and the tax will once again apply regardless of Order Type.
- Press OK to close the dialog.
- Press Save to commit the changes.
Example
To help better explain the concept, we will recreate Scenario 1 from the Feature Overview above by creating two taxes (Tax 1 = 10% and Tax 2 = 20%).
- Navigate to Manager > Settings > Accounting.
- Select the Taxes tab at the top of the screen.
- Select Create New Tax and enter the following information for the first tax:
- Name: Tax 1
- Amount: 10%
- Under Filter Tax By Order Type (Optional), press Tap to edit and select the Dine In Order Type.
- Press OK to exit the dialog.
- Press Save to commit the changes.
- Select Create New Tax and enter the following information for the first tax:
- Name: Tax 2
- Amount: 20%
- Under Filter Tax By Order Type (Optional), press Tap to edit and select the Dine In Order Type.
- Press OK to exit the dialog.
- Press Save to commit the changes.
From there, create an item priced at $1.00:
- Navigate to Manager > Settings > Menu.
- Select Items from the top of the screen.
- Select Add New Item and enter the following information under the General tab:
- Name: Item A
- Price: $1.00
- Press the Accounting tab along the top and add Tax 1 and Tax 2 onto the item (as shown below).
- Select Save to commit the item.
Once complete, navigate to the Order Entry screen to start the test:
- Create a new ticket.
- Set the Order Type to Dine In (if not already set by default).
- Select the newly created Item A to add it to the ticket.
If everything has been set up correctly, the ticket should apply both Tax 1 (10%) and Tax 2 (20%) to the $1.00 Item A on the ticket. This results in a Ticket Tax Total of $0.30, as shown below.
Selecting any other Order Type (in this example, Pickup), no tax is applied.
