Description: Create the “Generic / Text Only” Windows printer that is used on our POS systems with the below steps.
Note: This guide was written based on Windows 7, but the steps are fairly identical to Windows XP except the images shown will be slightly different, and “Printers & Devices” is called “Printers & Faxes” on XP.
Internal note:
"Generic / Text Only" printers should be used for all current makes/models of Shift4 printers (because they do not require drivers). Generic / Text Only printers are set up for Advanced Retail and QSR.
- HT-Retail: do not rename the printer from “Generic / Text Only” as the software points directly to this naming convention and should be kept as-is
- QSR: rename each Generic printer to “Receipt1”, “Receipt2”, “Receipt3”, etc. accordingly; however, they are in essence just a basic Windows printer like Retail
- To begin, click on Start and go to Devices & Printers.
- Click Add A Printer.
- Select Add a Local Printer.
- Select the COM port that has been assigned for the Virtual COM Port and press Next.
- Select the Generic / Text Only printer under manufacturer Generic.
- If you’re asked what version you want to use, click on Replace Current Driver.
- Click Next.
- Click Next.
- Press Finish to complete the setup. Do Not press “Print a test page” because the baud rates have not been set up and this will most likely fail.
- Right-click on the newly created Generic / Text Only Printer in Devices & Printers and Select Printer properties.
- Click on the Ports tab.
- Click on the newly created port and press Configure Port.
- Select the appropriate Baud Rate from the following options, then press OK to save.
- Sinocan P06: 19200
- Sinocan P11: 19200
- Epson TM-20II: 38400
- Epson T-20: 38400
- Seiko SII RP-D10: 115200
