Assigning EMV AID Types
Assigning the correct AID types to a merchant's Device involves two distinct methods: Configuring the EMV settings in transaction manager for UTG 3200 and below, or configuring EMV settings in TuneUp for UTG 3200 and above.
Note: Navigate to Configure EMV Devices in the Transaction Manager article for additional details for UTG below 3200
What Is an AID?
An Application Identifier (AID) identifies the available applications on an EMV card or EMV terminal. The application determines which network the transaction processes through.
An AID is made up of a Registered Application Provider Identifier (RID) and a Proprietary Application Identifier Extension (PIX). The RID identifies the card brand (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, and so on), and the PIX identifies the card issuer — the bank or institution that printed and configured the card (Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase, V Pay, and so on).
For example, the RID for Visa is "A000000003," and the PIX for V Pay is "2020," resulting in the full AID value "A0000000032020."
A card can have multiple AIDs loaded onto it. During a transaction, these can display on the PIN pad for the cardholder to choose from. With EMV, the cardholder is not simply choosing between credit and Debit — they are selecting from applications common to both the card and the merchant's terminal. This often includes one credit and one debit application, but a card may carry multiple credit or debit applications.
UTG 3200 and Below
- Log in to Transaction Manager and go to Settings > EMV Devices.
Note: The user will need EMV Device permissions to perform these steps. - Select the Device you wish to edit by selecting the Device ID.
- Adjust the API Terminal setting to the correct API TID (The TID that the POS is sending and that is configured for the Device in the UTG TuneUp).
UTG 3200 and Above
- Go to UTG TuneUp > Devices > EMV settings.
- Confirm if correct. AIDs are selected depending on whether the merchant has Gateway Debit (DB), AMEX (AX), JCB (JC), and Discover (NS) enabled on their account in Citadel.
- After the correct AIDs are selected, navigate to UTG Stand Alone and run a test
- Check the box to enable the "Prefer US common debit" option
