Item Requirements for Splitting
While most items can be easily split between checks, there are a few limitations in place that can prevent splitting an item. Many of these limitations are designed to prevent kitchen errors or issues that may occur in accounting if the item were permitted to be split.
In order to split an item, the following must be true:
- The item quantity is 1 on the ticket. If a dozen wings are priced as one item (one dozen wings = $15), you may split the item; if there are 12 wings at $2 each on a ticket, you may not split the item to put 6 on one ticket and 6 on another (though you may move items in this scenario).
- The ticket containing the item to be split cannot have a status of HOLD. This helps eliminate errors in the kitchen since most items must be prepared as a whole and then split into portions (either in the kitchen or at the table).
- The item is not weighed. Weighed items cannot be split due to potential errors in the calculation when the weight is not a whole number.
Once an item has been split between checks, Skytab POS attempts to divide the item's cost equally across the selected checks. In some situations, such as when a $10 item is split three ways, two of the checks will show the item's prorated cost as $3.33, while the other shows $3.34 to account for the entire item cost.
How to Split an Item
Once you have satisfied the requirements for splitting an item, use the following steps to split an item. Split Item allows you to select an item and split it evenly across multiple selected tickets.
- With multiple tickets selected, select Manage Tickets.
-
Select the item to split, and tap the Split Item button.
Note: This button is disabled if the preconditions for splitting an item have not been met, as listed above. - Select the tickets to which you want to add the item portion by either pressing the Select all button or tapping on each ticket in the list.
- Tap Ok to split the item among the selected tickets.
-
Press Save to save changes for the selected tickets or hold the Save button to display the Save & Print option.
Split Items on Tickets
After a split item has been added to a ticket, there are a few restrictions on those items to consider when working with tickets that have split items:
- Voiding a split item voids the item from all tickets that contain that item. This helps streamline reporting and inventory tracking. If the item was mistakenly added to a third ticket when it was intended to be split two ways, you must void the item, add it back to the original ticket, and split it between the correct tickets.
- Split items cannot be duplicated. When tracking quantity, duplicating portions of an item can lead to issues with inventory tracking, so the function has been disabled and results in an error if attempted.
- A split item cannot be appended on a historical ticket unless the quantity is readjusted to 1 for inventory purposes.
- A split item cannot be moved to a table area.
- Split items may be discounted separately, such as a customer using a loyalty discount, without affecting the other parts of the item on other tickets.
- Split items cannot be merged back together. If a merchant makes a mistake in splitting an item, the item must be voided from all tickets (which happens when one part of the item is voided from a ticket) and then added to tickets correctly.
- Price components of items such as modifiers, discounts, taxes, hidden taxes, supplemental fees, discounts, and gratuities are split and calculated based on the item portion on the ticket. For example, if a ticket contains 1/4 of an item (split 4 ways) – a $1 supplemental fee would be split into $0.25 on each ticket that contains an item portion.
