In Shift4 Dine, Items are the buttons you select on the Order Entry screen to add products to an order.

Create or Edit Menu Items
Create a Menu Item in Shift4 Dine to make an item available for configuration and use on the menu.
- Navigate to Manager > Settings > Menu > Items.

Tap Add New Item.
- On the General tab, complete the required fields:
- Item Name
- Revenue Class
- Department

Item Price
- Tap Save.
Edit a Menu Item in Shift4 Dine
Edit an existing Menu Item to change its configuration in Shift4 Dine.
- Go to Manager > Settings > Menu > Items.
- Select the Menu Item from the list on the left.
- Make the applicable changes.
- Tap Save.
Configure General Settings for a Menu Item
The General tab contains the primary settings for configuring a Menu Item in Shift4 Dine.
- Active: Makes the item active within the menu and available for sale.
- Favorite: Adds the item to the Favorites list module on the Order Entry screen.
- Item Name (required): Provides a unique, identifiable name for the item.
- Revenue Class (required): Defines the type of item for reporting purposes. Each item can have one Revenue Class.
- Department (required): Assigns the item to a Department. Each item can belong to one Department.
- Assign to Course: Assigns a course to the item, such as Appetizer, Dessert, Entree, or Salad.
- Item Price (required): Sets the price charged to the customer..
- Item Cost: Sets your cost for the item.
- Assigned Modifier Sets: Adds or removes Modifier Sets from the item.
Duplicate: Creates another item with the same attributes. The duplicate item requires a different name.
Reorder Modifier Sets Assigned to a Menu Item
Reorder assigned Modifier Sets to control the order in which they appear in the Item Functions menu.
- Under Assigned Modifier Sets, select Tap to edit.
- Select Edit.
- Reorder the Modifier Sets using the applicable controls:
- Use the middle arrows to move a Modifier Set up or down one position.
- Use the first and last arrows to move a Modifier Set to the top or bottom.
- Enable Sort A-Z to arrange assigned Modifier Sets alphabetically.
- Select Done.
- Select OK.
Configure Advanced Settings for a Menu Item
The Advanced tab contains additional settings that control how a Menu Item behaves in Shift4 Dine.

- Kitchen Print Name: Provides an alternative name for the Item when printed to the kitchen.
- Default Qty: Sets the quantity automatically added to a ticket when the item is selected from the Order Entry screen. When Item Sold by Weight is enabled, the quantity must be entered to two decimal places.
- Item UPC: Identifies the item with a value that cannot be duplicated in the system.
- Item Description: Provides a description of the item and can include allergen information for the customer.
- Printers: Assigns printers to the item.
- Item Sold by Weight: Allows you to enter the item's weight when selecting it on the Order Entry screen. Enabling this setting also activates Tare Weight, which can only be used with a scale.
- DO NOT Print Item on Customer Receipt: Determines whether the item prints on the customer receipt.
- Open Item: Allows you to assign the item's price when selecting it on the Order Entry screen.
- Show Special Request When Ordering: Displays the Special Request screen when the item is added to a ticket.
- Item Purchasable With Gift Card: Allows the item to be purchased using the Gift Card tender type. If this setting is not enabled, Gift Card is not listed as a tender option on the Payment screen.
Assign a Printer to a Menu Item
Assign a printer to determine where the Menu Item prints.
- Under Printers, select +.
- Select an available printer from the list on the left.
- Add the printer to the list on the right.
- Select OK.
Configure Accounting Settings for a Menu Item
The Accounting tab contains tax information for a Menu Item in Shift4 Dine.
Taxes appear in two groups:
Select the applicable tax option to open a dialog where you can modify the tax assigned to the item.
Note: Shift4 Dine uses Revenue Class tax setup. Assign taxes directly to individual items only when needed for individual cases.
Configure Inventory Tracking for a Menu Item
The Tracking tab contains quantity-on-hand and inventory tracking settings for a Menu Item in Shift4 Dine.
- Quantity on Hand: Sets the number of items currently in stock.
- Allow Ordering if Quantity is Zero: Controls whether the item can be added to an order when its quantity on hand reaches zero.
- Low Stock Indicator: Enables tracking of low stock.
- Alert at Amount: Required when the Low Stock Indicator is enabled. Displays a countdown of the quantity on hand on the item button when the configured threshold is reached.

Display Item Quantity on Login Screen: Displays the quantity on hand under Item Tracking on the login screen.
Note: An employee can press and hold an item on the Order Entry screen to edit its quantity on hand. If the employee does not have the Access Menu Setup permission, Shift4 Dine prompts for a PIN override.

Manage Scheduled Pricing for Menu Items
Scheduled Pricing is managed in Shift4 Dine Customer Hub. Visit Configure Dynamic Pricing in Shift4 Dine Customer Hub for information about scheduled pricing.
86 a Menu Item in Shift4 Dine
86 a Menu Item to make it unavailable for ordering when the item is out of stock.
- Go to Manager > Settings > Menu > Items.
- Select the Menu Item that is out of stock.
- Select the Tracking section.
- Set Quantity on Hand to 0.
- Set Allow Ordering If Quantity is Zero to Off.
- Select Save.
When a Menu Item is 86'd, it appears with a gray background. If someone attempts to order the item, Shift4 Dine displays the message, “Item cannot be ordered due to insufficient quantity.”
Deactivate a Menu Item in Shift4 Dine
Shift4 Dine does not allow Menu Items to be deleted after they are added to the system. Deactivate an item when you no longer want it available on the menu.
- Go to Manager > Settings > Menu > Items.
- Select the Menu Item you want to deactivate.
- Set Active to Off.
- Select Save.
Note: Deactivating the Menu Item is the available method for removing it from active use because Shift4 Dine does not support deleting Menu Items.
Sort Menu Items Alphabetically in Shift4 Dine
Sort the Menu Items assigned to a Department alphabetically to control their display order.
- Go to Manager > Menu > Departments.
- Select the Department from the list on the left.
- In the Items Assigned to Department section, select Tap to edit.
- In the Items Assigned section, select Edit.
- Set Sort A-Z to On.
- Select Done.
- Select OK.
- Select Save.
Reorder Menu Items in Shift4 Dine
Manually reorder Menu Items assigned to a Department when you want to use a custom order instead of alphabetical sorting.
- Go to Manager > Menu > Departments.
- Select the Department from the list on the left.
- In the Items Assigned to Department section, select Tap to edit.
- In the Items Assigned section, select Edit.
- Select the Menu Item you want to move.
- Use the applicable arrow control:
- Select the double up arrow to move the item to the top of the list.
- Select the up arrow to move the item up one position.
- Select the down arrow to move the item down one position.
- Select the double down arrow to move the item to the bottom of the list.
- Repeat these steps until the Menu Items are in the desired order.
- Select Done.
- Select OK.
