Description: You may use third-party barcode label printers for the barcode labels you generate in the HT-Retail system and place them on products within your store. This enables you to choose a printer based on your personal preference; however, we recommend certain models that integrate well with the software below.
Note: Shift4 does not supply nor offer support for third-party label printers themselves. For printer troubleshooting, we recommend you contact your third-party printer provider. However, we can assist you in downloading the proper drivers, setting up the printing preferences, creating the barcode label template, and testing the printed label to ensure a successful scan.

Recommended Models
There are two recommended models that integrate well with our software:
- Zebra LP2824+/ ZD410 – Zebra Drivers
- Dymo Label Writer 450/ 450 Turbo – Dymo Drivers
Important: Ensure that you are downloading ZPL, not EPL
Both printer companies offer similar functionality but have different features and price points, and you will need to determine which one better suits their business needs. Once the drivers are downloaded, you will be prompted to plug in the label printer to the USB port to complete the driver installation.
Dymo Specific Windows Printer Setup
If the Dymo printer is networked, then make sure the following is set on all workstations that will be using it. Once the drivers are downloaded, calibrate the label printer.
- Close the software and log in to the Admin section of the terminal.
- From there, open the Start Menu > Control Panel and select Devices and Printers.
- Right-click DYMO LabelWriter 450 to open the DYMO LabelWriter 450 Printing Preferences screen.
- Navigate to the Layout tab.
- Click the Advanced button.
- Under Paper Size, select Portrait or Landscape based on the label template layout.
- Ensure that the Paper Size matches the number of labels, which will be listed on the box of the labels.
- The label graphic Print Quality should be set to either:
- 300 x 300 dpi for standard tall or square labels
- 300 x 600 dpi for wide or double labels
- Under Printer Features, set Print Quality to Barcodes and Graphics, ensuring high-resolution barcodes.
Unless otherwise specified, no other settings need to be adjusted since they will be set up within the Label Template Designer.
- The Dymo Label Software is not needed and will only cause complications since HT Retail utilizes the Windows printer drivers to print custom-designed labels directly to the printer.
- If the labels are not Dymo brand, they will most likely not feed correctly.
- Make sure the print side of the label roll is face down in the printer and that the spool locking disc is all the way to the left and snug against the paper roll.
Zebra-Specific Windows Printer Setup
If the Zebra printer is networked, then make sure the following is set on all workstations that will be using it. Once the drivers are downloaded, calibrate the label printer.
- Close the software and log in to the Admin section of the terminal.
- Open the Start Menu > Control Panel and select Devices and Printers.
- Right-click ZDesigner LP2824+/ ZD410 to access the ZDesigner LP2824 Plus (ZPL) Printing Preferences screen.
- Select the Options tab.
- Under Paper Format, select the unit of measurement and if it should be Portrait or Landscape.
- This will be determined based on the label template layout.
- Set the Size of the label.
Important: No other settings need to be adjusted; they will be set up within the Label Template Designer.
Troubleshooting
If the first attempt at scanning a printed barcode label fails, retrace the setup steps for Windows Printer Settings for the appropriate barcode label printer. Ensure all settings are set exactly the same as shown in the instructions.
If all of the settings match, go back to the label template:
- Adjust the barcode type to be Code39 instead of the standard Code128.
- Select Save, and print another test label.
- Scan the barcode label on the Transaction screen.
- If the label scans successfully, DO NOT adjust any other settings.
- If changing the barcode to Code39 does not result in a successful scan, please contact Customer Support.
- When in doubt, calibrate the printer.
