Description: Review adding a tax in Hospitality below. To access this section of the POS, select Manager in the upper right corner of the Order Entry screen, and then select Menu > Taxes (the screen will default to Menu Items). Specifically, this article covers the following topics:
Important: Shift4 is not responsible for maintaining your Local, State, and/or Federal Taxes. You are ALWAYS accountable for your Tax Settings and should be aware of any tax changes that may affect your business.
Warning: Before adjusting the Tax Rate for any merchant, please ensure you are either speaking to an authorized user on the account or you are using the caller's login to change the Tax Rate. Ensure your call note regarding the Tax Rate change includes what the Tax Rate was before and after the change and who you worked with and that person's position.
Adding or Editing Taxes
To add or edit taxes within the system, navigate to Manager > Menu and select the Taxes option on the left side of the screen.
- To add a new tax, select New at the bottom of the screen.
- To edit an existing tax:
- Select the tax from the right side of the screen.
- Press Edit at the bottom of the screen to open the Edit Tax Rate screen.
- Make the desired changes to the tax.
- Select OK when complete.
Edit Tax Rate
- Tax Name/Description: Descriptive name that identifies this tax rate.
- Active: Enables the tax to be utilized throughout the system.

Tax Amount: Defines whether the tax will charge a percentage or straight dollar value:
- If percentage, enter in decimal format.
- If dollar value, enter the whole number the tax will charge.
- Apply a Tax to Specific Items and Revenue Classes: Applies the appropriate tax to selected items or revenue classes; select OK to complete.
Additional Tax Customization
- Hidden Tax: Determines if the tax displays on the receipt or adds directly to the item. Activating Show Actual Item Prices shows the actual item price on the receipts.
- You may also customize the receipt display when the ticket is entirely categorized as Liquor, including whether or not the tax applies and/or if the tax is hidden from the receipt and instead added directly to the item price.
- If revenue classes are selected, you may choose to only apply the tax when total of selected Revenue Classes exceeds threshold indicated in the space below. This does not work with hidden taxes.
- Round fractional cents up (Ceiling Taxes): Rounds up to the next whole cent when the tax result is fractional.
- Applies to Ticket Gratuities: Determines if a tax will include gratuities in the calculations.
- You may set the tax to Apply to All Items or Other Taxes.
- You may also determine if a tax will apply after the average amount per person meets or exceeds threshold and enter the threshold in the box below.

Advanced Tax Options
Selecting Advanced at the top of the Edit Tax Rate screen allows for additional tax configuration settings:

Give this tax its own subtotal line on receipts: Allows this tax to have a separate line on the receipts.
- The label can be entered in the box below.

Add another header line to receipts with this tax: Creates both a header and a second header to differentiate this tax on the receipt.
- You may also determine whether you want the tax to print on receipts or guest checks.

Mark items where this tax applies: Indicates to which items this tax is applied.
- You may enter the character and the legend name to appear at the bottom of the receipt.
- Filter tax based on section: Applies tax to preprogrammed sections; tap in the box, select the appropriate sections, and select OK.
- Apply Tax Only in Rev Center: Determines to which revenue centers this tax may be applied.
