Description: Review how to add or “adopt” and set up a printer on the QSR & Delivery software below. You can do this under the Database Settings > Printers (tab) by selecting Add New Printer and adding the name exactly as it appears in Windows.

When you access Admin > Config Tools > Database Settings > Printers (tab), you will see the list of printers currently adopted to the software on the left side. Each printer will show you its ID, Name, Type, and Chars p/ Line.
The naming convention for our Receipt printers and Kitchen printers is:
Note: The IP addresses in the image are examples. During set up, the IP address will automatically populate.

We only use three of the options under the “Types of Printers” selection. To choose/change the type of printer, select the type itself next to the printer you would like to choose/change it for.
By selecting the current option listed there, it’ll pop up a box with options to choose from:
- THERMAL is used for Thermal printers
- IMPACT is used for DotMatrix printers
- KD1, KD2 , KD3, KD4, etc. are used for KVS systems
The following sections go into detail about the setup of each “Type of Printer” listed here.
Printer Settings (Thermal vs. DotMatrix)
Thermal Printers Settings & Setup
Thermal printers can be either Kitchen printers and/or Receipt printers. In the above image, there are only Receipt printers showing as thermal, so this example displays these printers. However, it’s important to remember that a Kitchen printer may also be thermal, and the same settings will apply.
Thermal Printer Settings:
- ID: This will automatically be set by the database. No need to worry about this.
- Type: This should be set to THERMAL; this setting is important that it’s set correctly.
- Disabled: This is only if you wish to not have this printer function at all.
- Chars p/ Line: Thermal printers should always be set to 42.
DotMatrix (ie. “Impact”) Printers Settings
Unlike Thermal printers, which can be either receipt printers or kitchen printers, Impact printers (most commonly referred to as DotMatrix printers) are only ever Kitchen printers. Receipt printers have no color functionality, which is why they are not used as Kitchen printers. You may want to print some/all items in Red - that is why Impact printers exist.
Impact Printer Settings:
- ID: This is automatically set by the database. No need to worry about this.
- Type: Should be set to IMPACT; this setting is important that it’s set correctly.
- Disabled: This is only if you wish to not have this printer function at all.
- Chars p/ Line: Impact printers should always be set to 33.
Kitchen Video Monitor (Display) Settings & Setup
For a complete article about QSR KVS, please refer to KVS Overview for QSR & Delivery.
Kitchen Video Systems are not very common with QSR setups. However, they do exist and they can be requested. If you have a KVS system(s) installed, you will see a corresponding Windows printer labeled KD1 (and KD2 for a second screen, KD3 for a third screen, and so on).
Each KVS (or “KD” as referred to by QSR) is adopted to the software just like a printer would be adopted, and requires the following settings in the database for proper functionality.
Kitchen Video Systems Printer Settings:
- ID: This is automatically set by the database. No need to worry about this.
- Type: Should be set to KD1 for Video 1, KD2 for Video 2, KD3 for Video 3, and so on.
- Disabled: This is only if you wish to not have this printer function at all.
- Chars p/ Line: KD printers are generally set to 42, but can be set to 40 instead.
Kitchen Video screens use the ChefXML Software to send orders to the kitchen screens. Setting up the Database Settings portion is important because it tells the software what type of “printer” (i.e. Display) the Windows printer slot is. When orders are sent, they are better formatted to be displayed on a screen.
