Description: Open menu items in QSR prompt the user to enter the price when selected. To create an open menu item, follow the steps listed below.
For more information on creating or editing a menu item, visit the QSR: Menu Items article.
Create a New Menu Item
- To begin, log in to the system and navigate to Admin > Config Tools > Menu.
- From this page, select the Menu Editing button and choose New Menu Item.
- When prompted, enter the description of the menu item to say "Open Item," then press Save to access the Menu Details screen.
Select a Group
With the menu editor open, use the drop list to select the proper group for the menu item. Groups need to exist prior to creating a menu item. You may have to create a new Item Group for the Open Item category if the merchant wants it and name it OPEN ITEMS.
Important: You should never assign an Open Item to use the MODIFIER or MENU HEADER groups. Additionally, you should also avoid placing it into the COUPONS or PW PROT COUPONS group either. Either follow the link to create a new Item Group or use an existing one.
Enter a Sub-Category
Sub-Categories make searching for an item quick and easy, but they are also useful when viewing reporting of item sales. Set the menu’s Sub-Category to “OPEN ITEM.”
Set the Menu Function
This is the most important part of setting up the Open Item. The Menu Function tells the software to operate in a specific way. Open Item functionality comes pre-programmed in the form of the menu function option. You must select the Open Item option from this list.
Set the Tax Profile
The “Default” tax profile is the Default tax setting defined under Database Settings. To change the tax profile, select inside the tax profile box, and a popup box displays all available tax profiles.
- Taxable Open Item: Select the Default tax profile from the list
- Nontaxable Open Item: Select the No Tax option from the list
Note: If you wish to create a non-taxable open item, you need to set the Tax Profile to “No Tax” here. If you wish to have the option to either charge tax or not, you need to create two Open Item buttons, one taxable and one non-taxable. If you are making two Open Item buttons for tax purposes, make sure you name them accordingly. Example: “Open Item” and “Open Item (Nontaxable)” or “Open Item (No Tax)”
Set the Price
Since an Open Item prompts for a price, we won't set one up under the menu item itself. Leave the price next to level 1 at “0.00,” as shown below.
Position the Item Drag and Drop
Drag your new Open Item from the left editor section over to the right-side placement screen, and place/drag-and-drop on an empty circle of your choice.
