Description: Learn how to move Oracle Hospitality Simphony CAPS (Check and Posting Services) from a failed workstation to another workstation when the original CAPS workstation is unavailable. This procedure applies to non-PMS-integrated environments and restores check posting functionality by creating a new check posting database on a replacement workstation.
Need Help Moving CAPS Services?
Jump to the section below that matches what you need to do:
- Before You Begin
- Identify the Current and Replacement CAPS Workstations
- Locate the CAPS Service Host in EMC
- Move the CAPS Service Host
- Verify the New CheckPosting DB Database
- Reload All Workstations
Before You Begin
When the CAPS workstation fails and cannot be recovered, checks created on other workstations cannot post to the checkpostingdb database because the database resides on the failed CAPS workstation.
If replacing the failed CAPS workstation will take more than one day, or the merchant requires an immediate resolution, move CAPS services to another workstation and create a new checkpostingdb database on that workstation.
Important:
- Perform this procedure before the site opens for business to avoid issues with open guest checks.
- This procedure applies only to sites that are not integrated with a PMS system. Additional steps may be required for PMS-integrated environments.
- Confirm remote access is available to every workstation before proceeding. If remote access is unavailable, an on-site manager must perform a database reload on those workstations.
Identify the Current and Replacement CAPS Workstations
- At the location, identify:
- The failed CAPS workstation.
- The workstation that will become the new CAPS workstation.
- Access workstation information using either:
- The Terminal Hardware Info key from the sign-in screen
- The PMC key from the Manager screen.
- Record the following information:
- Workstation ID.
- Workstation name.
- Open the appropriate EMC application for the Oracle MTU product in use at the site.
Locate the CAPS Service Host in EMC
- In EMC, navigate to Setup > Hardware/Interfaces > Workstations
- Confirm:
- Which workstation is currently assigned as CAPS.
- Which workstation will become the new CAPS workstation.
- Record the following:
- Current CAPS Service Host number.
- Replacement workstation Service Host number.
Move the CAPS Service Host
- In EMC, navigate to: Setup > Property Parameters
- Select the Workstations tab.
- Locate Check and Posting; be careful NOT to select Check and Posting Backup.
- Confirm that the current CAPS workstation appears in the Service Host field.
- Select the ellipsis (...) icon next to the Service Host field.
- In the Select Service Host window:
- Locate the replacement workstation using the workstation name and Service Host number.
- Select the replacement workstation.
- Select OK.
- Save the change using the floppy disk icon at the top of the EMC window.
Verify the New CheckPostingDB Database
- Exit EMC.
- Connect to the newly assigned CAPS workstation.
- Wait several minutes for Oracle services to update. A brief Oracle update message may appear on the workstation screen.
- Verify that the following path now contains a CheckPostingDB database file: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA\
Reload All Workstations
- Perform a database reload on every workstation, including:
- The new CAPS workstation.
- All active POS workstations.
- Confirm that:
- The system recognizes the new CAPS workstation.
- Pending checks post successfully to the new checkpostingdb database.
- Verify that the check data is posting correctly to:
- R&A reports.
- Cloud reporting services.
Important: Existing pending checks on other workstations will begin posting to the new CAPS workstation after all workstations complete their database reloads.
