Description: The following article will outline how to update the Retail Based Application (RBA) firmware on an Ingenico Telium PIN pad.
Note: This article is strictly for U.S. Ingenico RBA devices only if you are attempting to update a Canadian CPX device, you will need to speak to your Merchant Processor on updating your device. Shift4 can not assist with updating CPX devices.
You will need to identify the following to gather the correct Ingenico update packages:
- What Make and Model is the device?
- What Firmware is currently on the device?
- What PCI PTS Version is your device?
- What version is your UTG software?
You can view the Device PCI PTS version and firmware version on the device boot up.
Model Type | Reset Procedure |
iSC 250/480: |
Press and hold the Clear (Yellow) and the Minus (-) Keys until the device chirps.
|
iPP 320/350: iWL 252/258: iCMP/iSMP4: |
Press and hold the Clear (Yellow) and the Period (.) keys until the device chirps.
|
On boot up on the first screen, you will see a message similar to the below image.
- If the device displays "C98-", you have a PCI PTS v3 device.
- If the device displays "C98*", you have a PCI PTS v4 device.
The device firmware version is visible on the Ingenico Copyright Screen, which will appear shortly after the above screen. If you miss these details, you can reboot the device again to gather this detail.
After you have identified the PCI PTS version, firmware version, and device model, we need to determine if you are on a UTG build above or below build 3000. To identify the UTG build, refer to the Verify File Build Versions for Universal Transaction Gateway (UTG).
If you are on a build of UTG above 3000, click here. Otherwise, continue with the build 2304 section below.
UTG Build 2304 (RBA 21.05.06)
If you are on a build of UTG on 2304, the maximum RBA version you can update to is RBA 21.5.6. you can download the below version update packages on the Resource Library here.
- iPP 320 RBA Packages
- iPP 350 RBA Packages
- iSC 250 RBA Packages
- iSC 480 RBA Packages
- iWL 252 and iWL 258 RBA Packages
- iCMP, iSMP, and iSMP4 RBA Packages
Once downloaded, you will need to locate three files within the package: the R10210506.OGZ, SECURITY.PGZ, and FORMS.TGZ.
- The R10210506.OGZ and SECURITY.PGZ will be in the Manual Update folder.
- The FORMS.TGZ will be in the Forms folder.
Note: The FORMS.TGZ file will appear as a compressed file on occasion after being downloaded. This is normally named FORMS without the .TGZ file extension, and can be pushed in the same manner described in this article.
Now that we have our software package, it’s time to move the necessary files for the update to the specified device folder.
-
...\ Shift4\UTG2\Update\Forms\(Device Make)(Device Model)(Software Version)
- EX: C:\ Shift4\UTG2\Update\Forms\Ingenico IPP320 RBA
Note: If there are files from a previous update in this folder, remove them.

Alt Method:
From within the current Universal Transaction Gateway install files, navigate to [..\Shift4\UTG2\Device Updates\Ingenico RBA] and locate the update package for your device type.
Move The R1023XXXX.OGZ, SECURITY.PGZ, and the FORMS.TGZ. into [..\Shift4\UTG2\Updates\Forms\Ingenico xxxXXX RBA.] for your device.
Now that we have our software package, it’s time to move the necessary files for the update to the specified device folder.
-
...\ Shift4\UTG2\Update\Forms\(Device Make)(Device Model)(Software Version)
- EX: C:\ Shift4\UTG2\Update\Forms\Ingenico IPP320 RBA
Note: If there are files from a previous update in this folder, remove them.
After the files have been placed in the correct directory in the UTG server PC, it is now time to push these files to the devices.
- You will have to open the UTG SA, Starting and Stopping the UTG (v2) Stand Alone, and then right-click anywhere on the colorful side of the screen once loaded.
- Access the Device Maintenance option on the selection list that appears. You will be brought to the Device Maintenance page with options for choosing individual devices, or groups of devices to have updated.
- Select the device(s) to update, and select Push Forms to start the download. The devices should show a “Please Wait” or “Updating” on the screen. Updating devices will be inoperable until the update is completed. Once complete, the device(s) will reboot on their own.
Note: Ingenico devices may look "frozen" at about 1000 KB or less during the update. This is due to the device losing its connection while applying the update(s) to the terminal and is expected behavior. It will reconnect, and shortly after this, it will reboot automatically.
Note: Multiple devices can update at the same time. The exact number can be verified or adjusted in the Devices tab in TuneUp, using Limit Simultaneous Downloads.
As these devices update, the next 'queued' device update will start. Depending on the connection type in use on the device, and the number of “device controllers” between the device and the UTG, the update process can be as fast as 20 minutes to as slow as an hour. Newer connection types tend to fall in the 20-minute range, whereas Serial and USB, especially if using the UTG stub, can extend the update to around forty-five minutes to over an hour.
