How is This Distance Calculated?
The distance that shows on the button itself is determined by a radial distance from Point A (your store location) to Point B (the customer’s address). This is determined by using the Geocode of the store to draw a straight line from Point A to Point B. This does not account for turn-by-turn directions, just a direct line from one location to another.
Because this distance is determined by drawing a straight line, it will most often differ from the actual Driving Directions determined by the pathway from Point A to Point B.
To determine the distance from the location, the radial estimate is the best and most accurate as you should not be determining a distance based on turn-by-turn but instead by drawing a straight line within a circle.
How Do I Locate The Actual Turn-By-Turn Directions?
Press the Driving Directions button to obtain the turn-by-turn directions. Turn-by-turn uses the store’s address and the customer’s address to determine the most effective route of travel.
This will often differ from the Radial Distance shown on the button because, most times, you cannot travel in a straight line from Point A to Point B (unless in an airplane).
What is the Difference in Distance Between the Two Screens?
The above sections of this article help you understand how the distance is calculated and why the numbers are showing as such. The above explanation explains radial distance vs. turn-by-turn directions, which are completely different.
- Radial Distance = 6.27 Miles
- Turn-by-Turn Distance = 9.1 Miles
The difference here is irrelevant if you charge a delivery fee based on the radial distance (most commonly used and most fair to the customer).
If you have an issue with the distance showing on the radial button, you can press the Driving Directions button to view the travel distance instead. Then, you can adjust the Zone on the customer accordingly.
